·pala It is impossible to accomplish through various analyses. If done like the former, it can be accomplished, but if done like the latter, it is impossible to achieve tranquility. For someone who has already achieved tranquility, rather than merely prolonging the habit of abiding meditation as before, if one engages in analytical meditation, using wisdom to individually discern the meaning of "as it is" or "as many as there are" according to the appropriate circumstances, then ultimately one can induce a special samadhi of one-pointedness. Therefore, through it, one can achieve an extremely powerful one-pointed samadhi, which the former cannot do. Hence, analytical meditation is praised. This very method of practice relies on seeking tranquility first, and then later cultivating insight. Although the object of focus, such as selflessness, is singular, the general reason why two different methods of cultivating tranquility and insight arise is this. Specifically, cultivating insight with the aspect of tranquility and violence, which distinguishes the faults and virtues of the upper and lower realms, and with the aspect of selflessness, which cultivates by analyzing the meaning of selflessness with wisdom, is necessary for generating strong conviction and stability. Therefore, it has great power in abandoning each of its objects of abandonment. Insight that focuses on "as many as there are" not only cultivates the aspect of tranquility and violence to abandon manifest afflictions, but also, as explained in the instructions of the Prajnaparamita, it is also analytical meditation that distinguishes the characteristics of the eighteen elements. By this example, one should also understand other insights that cultivate by distinguishing the meaning of "as many as there are." The instructions of the Prajnaparamita state that before generating tranquility and insight that focus on "as it is," one should first generate tranquility and insight of the yogi's ground that focus on "as many as there are." However, here, according to the views of Shantideva, Kamalashila, and others, one first generates any kind of tranquility and then generates insight, and it only shows insight that focuses on "as it is." Secondly, then, according to which vehicle—Small Vehicle, Great Vehicle, Sutra, or Tantra—is this method of generating tranquility and insight in a gradual sequence based? This is common to both Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and the Great Vehicle of the Paramitas, and it is also common to the four major schools. It is similar for the three sections of Tantra, in the views of the respective Tantras and the great commentators of these Tantras, the mantra

The stages of the path have been explained. For Anuttarayoga, the Secret Instructions of the Perfection of Wisdom say: When examining one's own mind, all dharmas reside in one's own mind. This dharma resides in the vajra of space. There is no dharma and no nature of dharma. As stated in the Guhyasamaja, and as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: Relying only on the mind, one does not examine external objects. And so on, focusing on mind-only, and focusing on Suchness, and explaining the three grounds of the yoga of non-appearance. It seems that on the first two grounds, the methods of accomplishing shamatha and vipashyana through stabilizing meditation and analytical meditation are explained as before. It is therefore considered similar to the generation stage in the tantras that focus on Suchness. Our own system is that even in the case of Anuttarayoga, it is necessary to cultivate the understanding of the view in the way that it arises from the Madhyamaka treatises. In terms of cultivation, although there is contemplation of Suchness in some of the post-meditation periods of the generation stage and completion stage, when the completion stage practitioner who has gained the ability to touch the key points on the body cultivates Suchness in equipoise, it is necessary to meditate by placing the view first, but do not do it like the analytical meditation of vipashyana that arises from other treatises. Therefore, at that time, while engaging in analytical meditation, do not stop meditating single-pointedly on Suchness from the perspective of the view. Because it is not the time to clearly show here the reasons why doing so is sufficient, here are explained the reasons for doing so in other paths. The third is that if the view of selflessness has not been found, then no matter what kind of meditation is done, that meditation does not abide in the meaning of Suchness. Therefore, that view must be found, and even if there is an understanding of the view, if one does not meditate on Suchness by remembering the view and placing it on it, it will not become meditating on Suchness. Therefore, after having previously conducted an examination of the view once, abiding without thinking of anything in the mind is also not cultivating Suchness. Merely becoming accustomed to remembering the view and placing it on it is also merely exhausting the previous method of cultivating shamatha. Therefore, this is not the meaning of the treatise that explains the method of cultivating vipashyana that is separate from that. Therefore, the meaning of selflessness should be cultivated by individually examining it with wisdom as previously explained. Even if one only does analytical meditation, it is what was previously generated.
