Because the appearances that possess a basis are not truly established, and merely because they are not truly established, it is necessary to establish that what is to be refuted is false. Therefore, to establish something as conventionally existent, it is not necessary to establish it with the wisdom of ultimate reality, but it must be something that is not harmed by any conventional or logical valid cognition. As it says in the commentary on the "Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning": "Because the aggregates of appropriation exist conventionally as impermanent, etc., the apprehension of these four is, in relation to that, not mistaken. And because the aggregates do not exist conventionally as permanent, etc., the apprehension of these four is, in relation to that, said to be mistaken." And in the "Entering the Middle Way": "The non-Buddhists, greatly agitated by the sleep of ignorance, and whatever they impute to themselves, and whatever is imputed to illusions, mirages, etc., those are not even existent in the world." Thus, the self and the chief, etc., which are completely imputed by the non-Buddhists, and the objects of attachment to illusory horses and cattle, etc., are said in the scriptures not to exist even conventionally. Therefore, to establish something as conventionally existent merely because it exists in the eyes of a deluded person is a meaningless statement in the system of the Consequentialists, and no other great Madhyamika would accept it. The "Entering the Middle Way" also says that objects and subjects are treated equally in terms of existence and non-existence, but this is not merely in terms of existence and non-existence in general, but in terms of their inherent existence and non-existence. Therefore, although all things that are established as conventionally existent are established as existent by the power of conventional terminology, it is not accepted that everything established by that power exists conventionally. Although it is only accepted that they are established by the power of convention, the word "only" does not cut off the meaning of being a conventional subject, and it certainly does not cut off the fact that the meaning of establishment is established by valid cognition. It is not like this: not being satisfied with establishing something by the power of conventional imputation, one searches for how the imputed meaning, which is not merely that, exists in reality, and if one finds it, one establishes it as existent, and if one does not find it, one establishes it as non-existent. But this system does not act in this way. Because they believe that if one searches in that way and finds something, it will become truly established. Therefore, they do not accept that something found to exist after such investigation exists even conventionally, and the boundary between investigating and not investigating in ultimate reality is also established from there. If something is established by its own characteristic, then the meaning of not being merely established by the power of a conventional subject will become existent by its own nature.
