Samatha and vipassana, both require separate efforts in practice. Having attained both, through the analytical meditation of separate contemplation, one is able to induce samatha, therefore it is a union. Here, investigation is vipassana, and the ultimate abiding of investigation is special samatha, which focuses on emptiness. In the "Perfection of Wisdom Instructions," it also says: "After that, focusing on the image with conceptualization, when the mind experiences both the continuous and uninterrupted stream of attention to that image, at that time it is called the path of union of samatha and vipassana. Among them, samatha and vipassana are a pair, and the connection is having, that is, entering by mutually binding." It is said here that uninterrupted means that it is not necessary to stop thinking and abide in non-conceptualization after analytical meditation, but rather analytical meditation itself can induce non-conceptualization. Experiencing both means experiencing both samatha, which focuses on the image of non-conceptualization, and vipassana, which focuses on the image with conceptualization. But this is not at the same time, but rather experienced through the uninterrupted stream of attention of practice. Then, if it is thought that previously samatha has been achieved, and then the abiding aspect is achieved through analytical meditation of separate contemplation, this contradicts the previous statement. That is because, before samatha is achieved, if the alternation of the ultimate abiding of repeated investigation is not performed, samatha cannot be achieved. After obtaining samatha, practicing in that way can show the characteristics of achieving samatha, so there is no contradiction. In addition, it is also considered that before vipassana is achieved, the immediately following analytical meditation can induce a state of one-pointedness. Before vipassana is achieved, if the alternation of the ultimate abiding of repeated investigation is not performed, samatha cannot be achieved. After obtaining samatha, analytical meditation cannot induce non-conceptualization, what was said above is abandoning that special case, and it is said in the case where it is impossible to achieve before that. In short, before samatha is achieved, samatha cannot be achieved by the abiding meditation of the ultimate abiding of alternating abiding and investigation. After samatha is achieved, before vipassana is achieved, analytical meditation can induce the abiding aspect of one-pointedness.
