From these stages of the path, the way in which the realization of emptiness arises is considered as follows: First, meditate on the selflessness of persons. Then, with mindfulness and awareness, grasp the meaning of the selflessness of phenomena and meditate on it. If a session is too long, mindfulness and awareness cannot grasp it, and it will alternate between agitation and dullness, with little effect. Therefore, divide each of the four sessions of morning, afternoon, evening, and dawn into four smaller sessions, making sixteen sessions a day for meditation. When you feel clarity or experience something, you should interrupt it. If you meditate in this way, and when you feel like you haven't meditated for long, you look and see that the sun and time have passed quickly, then it means that the mind has been grasped. If you feel like you have meditated for a long time, and you look and see that nothing has passed, then it means that the mind has not been grasped. When the mind is grasped, you will feel that afflictions are reduced, and you may even feel like you don't want to sleep. After that, if you can persevere through each session, such as in the morning, four qualities will arise: Non-conceptualization means that when in equipoise, you don't even feel the breath going in and out, and the breath and thoughts become subtle. Clarity means that it is as clear as the middle of the sky at noon in autumn. Purity means that it is as pure as pouring water into a clear container and looking at it in the sun. Subtlety means that when looking in the above three states, you can even see one part of splitting the tip of a hair into two. Such a state is in accordance with the arising of non-conceptual wisdom, but in relation to non-conceptual wisdom, its own nature is conceptual thought, so it is called inverted. As the Madhyāntavibhāga says, "In accordance with and inverted." This is how it is explained. As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga, even the best meditations on emptiness by ordinary beings must be established as "in accordance with and inverted." Even if other qualities do not arise, as long as you meditate on the meaning of the non-erroneous view as previously explained, you are meditating on the meaning of selflessness. If you are not meditating on the meaning of the non-erroneous view that has been ascertained, then even if these four qualities arise, you cannot consider it to be meditating on the definitive meaning. Therefore, whether or not you are meditating on the meaning as it is, is as previously explained. After meditating on that, how it grows like an illusion should also be understood as previously explained.

It is also. Third, the way to combine these two, calm and insight, is as described in the context of the measure of their accomplishment. If one has not attained both calm and insight, one cannot combine them, so to combine them, one must necessarily attain both. This also, from the very beginning of attaining insight, one will attain the combination. The way to do this is to rely on the previous calm abiding and engage in analytical meditation, which arises through the sequence of the four mental engagements, including diligent entry, as mentioned earlier. When the fourth mental engagement arises as described earlier, it becomes a combination. That is, at the end of analytical meditation, one engages in and cultivates stabilizing meditation, which becomes a stabilizing meditation like the attainment of calm abiding. Thus, it is also stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "How do calm abiding and insight become mixed and equally yoked, and what is called the path of yoking? It is said: Among the nine aspects of the mind abiding, like this, having attained the ninth aspect of equal placement, and relying on that accomplishment of samādhi, one strives diligently to discriminate dharmas with higher knowledge. At that time, the path of discriminating dharmas enters naturally and without effort, and like the path of calm abiding, without manifest activity, insight becomes completely pure and completely subdued, and follows after calm abiding, and is completely seized by ease. Therefore, the calm abiding and insight of that become mixed and enter equally, and it is called the path of yoking calm abiding and insight." And in the final Bhāvanākrama, it is also said: "If at any time, because of being separated from sinking and excitement, one enters equally and enters naturally, so that the mind becomes extremely clear about that very suchness, then one should abandon effort and let go. At that time, one should know that the path of yoking calm abiding and insight is accomplished." Thus it is said. If so, why is such a thing called a combination? Such a thing, before it is attained, cannot draw the state of non-discrimination by the self-power of analytical meditation with separate discriminations. Therefore, analytical meditation and stable
