When meditation makes wisdom extremely strong, because the component of calm abiding is small, just like a candle placed in the wind, the mind shakes, and one cannot see that one thing very clearly. Therefore, at that time, one should meditate on calm abiding. Even if the component of calm abiding is large, one cannot see that one thing very clearly, just like a person overcome by sleep. Therefore, at that time, one should also meditate on wisdom. As for how to act during the main practice, the conclusion, and the breaks between sessions, one should understand it as explained in the case of the person of small capacity. Like this, when meditating on the meaning of selflessness, when dullness and agitation arise, one should recognize them, and how to apply mindfulness and awareness to cut them off, and when dullness and agitation are not equal, how to naturally enter into equanimity, and how to relax effort, etc., one should understand it as explained earlier in the chapter on calm abiding. The "Perfection of Wisdom Instructions" says: For the object to be meditated upon, first cultivate calm abiding, generate pliancy; then, again, perform analytical meditation of insight on it, accomplish pliancy; when these are separately accomplished, they are said to be combined. Like this, it does not seem necessary to perform analysis and placement in the same session, so it is thought that it is permissible to perform them in separate sessions. What is important here is: one must strongly generate certainty on emptiness, which is the opposite of how one's own ignorance fabricates attachment, and then meditate on emptiness. If one does not refute the attachment of self-grasping and ignorance, but only meditates on a separate emptiness, then it does not harm these two at all, just like sending a ransom to the west gate to harm a demon in the east gate. The previous masters repeatedly said this, which seems very important. Like this, what has been said above is only rough. As for the subtle faults and merits during meditation, one should rely on qualified spiritual friends and also understand through one's own meditation, so I will not elaborate further. These methods of meditation are based on the previous instructions of the Stages of the Path and have been expanded. As Potowa's "Bellows Book" says: Some people, when listening and thinking, use reason to determine the lack of inherent existence.

It is said that during meditation, one should only meditate on non-conceptuality. If that is the case, it is an unrelated emptiness. Because it is meditated on separately, it will not become an antidote. Therefore, even during meditation, one should separately examine one and many, dependent origination, etc., through familiarization, and also abide slightly in non-conceptuality. Meditating in that way is the antidote to afflictions. Wanting to follow one deity and wanting to practice the way of the Perfection of Wisdom, that is the way to cultivate wisdom. That is also to follow after becoming familiar with the selflessness of the individual. As it is said. Jowo (Atisha) also said: By whom is emptiness realized? By the one prophesied by the Tathagata, the disciple of Nagarjuna, Chandrakirti, who saw the truth of reality. Through the instructions transmitted from him, the truth of reality will be realized. As he said. The way to guide it, as Jowo (Atisha) said in the "Quintessence of the Middle Way," is to alternate between analytical meditation and meditation that rests on the meaning of that analysis. That is no different from the system of the teacher Kamalashila. As mentioned earlier, the views of the Madhyamakavatara, the Madhyamakahrdaya, and the teacher Shantideva are also the same. It is also extensively discussed in the treatises of Maitreya and the noble Asanga. Since the wise Shantipa, who holds its system without reversing it, also clearly explained it in the "Perfection of Wisdom Instructions," the way to cultivate vipashyana seems to be consistent with the treatises and instructions transmitted from Nagarjuna and Asanga. Fourth, the measure of accomplishing vipashyana through meditation: When meditating after examining with the wisdom of discriminating awareness, until the previously mentioned extreme pliancy has not arisen, it is in accordance with vipashyana, and from the time that extreme pliancy arises, it is the defining characteristic of vipashyana, and the nature and manner of arising of extreme pliancy are as previously stated. This is also because there is also the pliancy that is drawn by the previously accomplished shamatha that has not deteriorated, so it is not just a general existence of pliancy. So what is it? If the pliancy can be drawn by the power of the analytical meditation itself, then from that point on it will become vipashyana. That is the same for both vipashyana that focuses on suchness and vipashyana that focuses on all phenomena.
