Thus, in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it is said: "Lord, until the Bodhisattva attains the complete pliancy of body and mind, what is the name for the mental engagement that, with the object of concentration, inwardly engages with those dharmas that have been well considered?" Maitreya, it is not Vipassanā, but it should be said to be endowed with faith and agreement that is in accordance with Vipassanā. Also, in the Prajñāpāramitā Upadesha, it is said: "When one abides in the state of having attained complete pliancy of body and mind, one should individually examine with faith the meaning of what has been considered, with the object of the image of concentration within. Until the complete pliancy of body and mind arises, it is mental engagement in accordance with Vipassanā, and when it arises, it is Vipassanā." Thus it is said. The manner in which Samatha and Vipassanā, which take as their object the suchness of things, become united, is also taught in the same way as those that take as their object the reality of things. If pliancy can be drawn forth by its own power, then it can also draw forth single-pointedness of mind. Therefore, drawing forth single-pointedness by one's own power through analytical meditation is a quality of having accomplished Samatha. Thus, if one who has well accomplished Samatha engages in analytical meditation, it can also become an aid to Samatha. Therefore, one should not think that engaging in analytical meditation will diminish the abiding aspect. The criterion for whether one is practicing Vipassanā when engaging in stabilizing meditation and analytical meditation that take as their object the reality of things is whether one has gained a clear and unmistaken understanding of either of the two views of selflessness and meditates on that as an object. It cannot be distinguished by anything else. If one asks how it cannot be distinguished, the answer is: when one meditates, the gross appearances of the object and the subject cease, and the mind possesses the qualities of being aware, clear, and pure, like a clear sky, and abides for a long time like a lamp that is not moved by the wind. The appearances of external and internal objects appear in the mind like a rainbow or a thin mist, and one abides in that for a long time. Whatever appears as an object grasped in the face of the mind consciousness

When the mind is focused on everything, even the slightest attachment will dissolve and be purified. This initially appears in relation to gross external objects such as forms and sounds. With practice, eventually even the awareness and experience of objects will disappear like the previous intellectual forms. Even when the mind is focused on these, situations such as being unable to tolerate even the slightest attachment will occur. However, this cannot be equated with realizing the view of the two-fold non-self-nature of suchness, nor with the arising of vague appearances. Even if one does not focus on the view, if one maintains a state for a long time, many such appearances will occur. Therefore, the meaning of illusion-like must arise based on both the ascertainment of reasoning that determines the absence of inherent existence, as previously explained, and the undeniable appearance established by conventional valid cognition. When forms and so on appear in the mind like a rainbow, thin and extremely clear, this is because they are free from tangible contact. Although they are not tangible, they are merely a combination of appearance and clarity. Therefore, there is no ascertainment of the absence of inherent existence in such ascertainment. This is because the object to be refuted, inherent existence, and tangible contact are grasped as one, and then the name of absence of inherent existence is applied. If it is not like this, and such is considered to be the meaning of illusion and falsehood as explained in Madhyamaka, then if rainbows and thin smoke are taken as the basis of distinction, the thought that they have inherent existence will not arise, because establishing the basis of distinction itself is establishing appearance without inherent existence. Similarly, if tangible contact is taken as the basis of distinction, the ascertainment of the absence of inherent existence cannot be drawn from it, because establishing the basis of distinction itself is grasping at inherent existence. Therefore, when forms and so on appear in this way, the appearance of thinness and clarity itself does not refute the slightest view that holds these things as the reality of their mode of existence, so it is not the meaning of illusion-like. However, for those who have previously gained a pure view and have not forgotten it, these things do appear as illusion-like, as previously stated. Passed down from Geshe Gonpawa.
