From page to. From page to. Needed. Moreover, it is not enough to just understand it; when practicing, one must remember the view, examine it, and meditate on the meaning of the examination itself. For this, it is necessary to both settle without examining the meaning of selflessness and to meditate after examining with discriminating wisdom. One-sidedness is not enough. There are three points here: the reason why both settling meditation and analytical meditation are needed; the cessation of disputes about this; and a brief explanation of the key points of how to practice. The first point is: if there is no certainty in the view that decisively understands the meaning of selflessness, the realization of vipassanā will not arise. This is because it is said to be the cause of it, and not hearing the words explaining this view is said to be an obstacle to vipassanā. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "Bhagavan, from what cause do śamatha and vipassanā arise?" Maitreya: "They arise from the cause of pure morality and from the cause of pure view arising from hearing and thinking." It also says: "Not hearing the words of the noble ones as desired is an obstacle to vipassanā." Also, as it says in the *Sreṇikāputra Sūtra*: "Wisdom arises from hearing, and wisdom abandons afflictions," and so on, as previously quoted. The way vipassanā arises from that view is: first, when establishing it, one establishes it by discriminating from many avenues of scripture and reasoning. When it is established, it will not arise if one does not cultivate it by repeatedly examining it with discriminating wisdom, but only engages in settling meditation. Therefore, when meditating after śamatha has been accomplished, one must examine and then cultivate. Some people, although they do not want to not examine from the beginning, think that if they do analytical meditation when meditating after having settled on it through hearing and thinking, then all thoughts are grasping at characteristics. If one does not cultivate in this way, then whatever thoughts there are are grasping at characteristics, and it is unreasonable to prevent ordinary beings from meditating on selflessness with non-conceptual wisdom. Moreover, if all those thoughts are grasping at truth, and therefore one prevents them when meditating, then one must also do those with thoughts when establishing it, so one must also prevent them. And all of teaching students, debating, writing, and observing, etc., also

If you think that contemplation is necessary, then it must also be prevented at that time, because the grasping at truth (Tibetan: བདེན་འཛིན་) needs to be prevented during meditation, and there is no difference that it is not needed at other times. If you don't want it that way, but think that examining from many aspects with scripture and reasoning is to make those who have not realized the meaning of selflessness realize it, and that the view has already been found, so it is not needed at the time of meditation, then in that case, selflessness is directly realized on the path of seeing. Then, meditating on the selflessness that has already been seen becomes meaningless. If you think that it is necessary to meditate because what is to be abandoned by meditation (Tibetan: སྒོམ་སྤང་) is abandoned by habituation, and it is not abandoned by merely seeing, then it is the same. Here, too, although it has already been determined by listening and thinking, it is necessary to become accustomed to determining it, because the more it is determined, the more accustomed it is, the more intense, long-lasting, clear, and stable that determination becomes, and so on. Therefore, as it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition (Tibetan: རྣམ་འགྲེལ་), "Certainty and imputation are, by nature, what is harmed and what harms." Like that, these two are what is harmed and what harms, so the more stable and intense the certainty becomes, the more it harms imputation. Therefore, here, too, it is necessary to stabilize the certainty of selflessness more and more, and that needs to be thought about from the perspective of many harms and proofs. If it is not like that, then for impermanence, karma and its effects, the faults of samsara, the mind of enlightenment, loving-kindness, and compassion, etc., after gaining an understanding of these, one would have to cultivate by holding only one attitude of "I will die" without contemplating, because all the reasons are the same. Therefore, to lead to pure certainty, it is not enough to just make vows such as "I will die," "I will attain Buddhahood for the sake of sentient beings," and "Sentient beings are so pitiful." Just as it is necessary to think from many aspects, the stability and intensity of the certainty of selflessness cannot be achieved by just holding a vow. It is necessary to think from the perspective of many harms and proofs, as has already been explained many times in the context of the person of small capacity (Tibetan: སྐྱེས་བུ་ཆུང་ངུ་). In this way, too, the Stages of Meditation (Tibetan: སྒོམ་རི)
