Since stability does not come from one's own power, one finds a stable abode through the very examination of much investigation by the wisdom of discriminating awareness, which comes from having attained superior seeing; therefore, union is also established from there. Therefore, just as a small blade of grass floats on still water, one should not mistake the combination of merely examining the meaning of selflessness in a stable, non-conceptual state without losing awareness for the union of calm abiding and superior seeing. Therefore, the manner of the union of calm abiding and superior seeing should be understood as it appears in those authentic texts, and one should not trust explanations that fabricate something else. Through these, it seems that many differences also need to be distinguished in the methods of cultivating calm abiding and superior seeing, but I have not written them for fear of too many words. Now, I will briefly speak about the meaning of the general path: First, the root of the path lies in the way to rely on a spiritual friend, so determine its essence. Then, generate a genuine desire to take the essence from leisure, which will constantly encourage you from within to practice, and meditate on the topics of leisure and fortune in order to generate that. Then, if you do not turn away from the mind that seeks the benefit of this life, a strong desire for the next life will not arise, so strive to meditate on impermanence, that the body will not stay for long, and how one wanders in the lower realms after death. At that time, since a genuine mind of remembering fear arises, generate certainty from the depths of your heart in the qualities of the Three Jewels, abide in the common refuge vows, and train in their precepts. Then, generate and stabilize faith in the great foundation of all white dharmas—karma and its effects—from many perspectives, strive to engage in virtue and turn away from non-virtue, and constantly enter the path of the four powers. In this way, when the topics of the lesser being's dharma are complete, contemplate the faults of samsara in general and in particular in many ways, and turn your mind away from samsara as much as possible. Then, identify the nature of karma and afflictions, the causes from which samsara arises, and generate a genuine desire to abandon them. Generate correct certainty in the general teachings of the three trainings, the path to liberation from samsara, and especially strive to practice the individual liberation vows that you have promised. In this way, the dharma of the intermediate being

If wealth is exhausted due to greed, and one falls into the ocean of samsaric suffering, one should also think that mothers are the same, and should cultivate the mind of bodhicitta, which has love and compassion as its root, and strive to generate this mind. Without this mind, practicing the six perfections and the two stages, etc., is like building a building on a foundation. If a little experience arises in the mind, then one should take the bodhisattva vows, strive to practice the trainings, and strengthen the aspiration. Then listen to the vast conduct of the bodhisattvas, know the boundaries of cessation and progression, and generate a strong desire to learn. After these thoughts arise, then one should take the vows of entering, and practice the six perfections that ripen one's own mind and the four means of attraction that ripen the minds of others, etc. In particular, one should protect the root downfalls with great diligence, risking one's life. Strive not to be defiled by small and medium sins and misdeeds, and even if defiled, strive to confess. After that, because it is necessary to practice the last two perfections in particular, one should become proficient in the method of cultivating meditation and practice samadhi. One should generate in the mind a pure view of the two selflessnesses that is free from the extremes of permanence and annihilation, and take this view as the object of meditation, and practice with the knowledge of the pure method of cultivation. Such meditation and wisdom are called calm abiding and insight, and there is nothing else besides them, so after taking the bodhisattva vows, one should practice them in the midst of practicing the trainings. In this way, if one cultivates the lower and lower dharmas, one will develop a strong desire for the higher and higher dharmas, and when one hears the higher and higher dharmas, one will develop an increasing desire to practice the lower and lower dharmas, then one has grasped the point. If one does not know anything about the former, and only knows a little about a corner of the mind or a point of view, and then one is self-righteous, then it is extremely difficult to grasp the point, so one must develop a definite understanding of the complete body of the path. When practicing these dharmas, one should also make good use of discriminating awareness and equalize all thoughts. For example, if one feels that one is not respectful enough to the spiritual friend who guides the path, then because the spiritual friend is the root of all good qualities, one should strive to practice the method of relying on him. Similarly, if one lacks enthusiasm for practice, then one should think about the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments and attachment to this life.
