It is widely stated. The third verse explains the meaning of emptiness of inherent existence through dependent origination, which relies on conditions. The fourth verse explains the benefits of realizing emptiness in this way. Similarly, it is said: "When the wise realize the arising of dependent origination, they will not rely on extreme views." Thus, it is taught that realizing dependent origination cuts off clinging to extremes. Furthermore, if there were an inherent nature established by its own entity, the Buddhas and Shravakas should have seen it as such, but they did not. Moreover, since conditions cannot do anything to that inherent nature, the net of conceptual proliferation clinging to signs cannot be cut off, resulting in no liberation. As stated in the Sutra of the Elephant's Strength: "If phenomena had inherent existence, the Buddhas and Shravakas would know it. Permanent phenomena would not pass into Nirvana, and the wise would never be free from proliferation." This is how it is taught. In the third, fourth, and fifth chapters, although it would be excellent to establish the absence of self in phenomena through reasoning that refutes the inherent existence of the twelve sources, the aggregates, and the elements, I have not elaborated due to fear of excessive words. Thirdly, the way to abandon obscurations through familiarizing oneself with these views is as follows: Having seen that there is not even a particle of inherent existence in self and what belongs to self, by familiarizing oneself with its meaning, the view of the perishable aggregate that clings to self and what belongs to self will be reversed. When that is reversed, the four graspings, such as craving for pleasure, which were previously explained, will also be reversed. When that is reversed, it is impossible for existence to arise from the condition of grasping, so the birth that connects the aggregates due to the condition of existence will cease, and liberation will be attained. The eighteenth chapter states: "For the sake of pacifying self and what belongs to self, there will be no clinging to self or clinging to what belongs to self." It also states: "When the thought of self and what belongs to self is exhausted in internal and external objects, near grasping will cease, and when that ceases, birth will be exhausted." This is how it is taught. If one acts in this way, then near grasping is affliction, and existence is karma. Therefore, liberation will be attained by exhausting the cause of birth—karma and afflictions. That same text states: "Liberation comes from the exhaustion of karma and afflictions." And how are karma and afflictions exhausted? That same text also states: "Karma and afflictions arise from conceptualization, and proliferation arises from those proliferations. Emptiness will cause them all to cease." This is how it is taught.

Thus it is. Regarding the continuum of samsara of birth and death, this arises from karma. Only the actions of body, speech, and mind possessed of afflicted minds are the karma that accomplishes samsara. Therefore, karma arises from afflictions. If one does not engage in false conceptualizations that impute characteristics such as good and bad to objects, then afflictions rooted in the view of the aggregates as a real self will not arise. Therefore, afflictions such as attachment and aversion, which are rooted in the view of the aggregates as a real self, arise from improper conceptualizations. Because it is only those who cling to the eight worldly concerns, men and women, vases, woolen cloth, forms, feelings, and so forth, thinking, "This is true!" who conceptualize those objects with improper attention. Therefore, conceptualization arises from the proliferation of clinging to reality. As the Clear Words states: "The proliferation of the world is also entirely due to emptiness, because all things are stopped by viewing them as emptiness. How so? Because if there is an object of focus, then there will be the proliferation as described above. If the daughter of a barren woman is not focused upon, then those with attachment will not engage in proliferation with that as its object. If proliferation is not engaged in, then improper conceptualization will not engage in its object. If conceptualization is not engaged in, then the collection of afflictions rooted in the view of the aggregates as a real self will not be generated from clinging to 'I' and 'mine.' If the collection of afflictions rooted in the view of the aggregates as a real self is not generated, then negative actions will not be done. Those who do not do negative actions will also not experience the cycle of birth, aging, and death." So it is said. The way in which understanding emptiness reverses these is also stated in that same text: "Because emptiness is the nature of completely pacifying all proliferation, by relying on emptiness, one becomes free from proliferation. And by being free from proliferation, conceptualization is also reversed, and when conceptualization is reversed, afflictions are reversed, and when karma and afflictions are reversed, birth is reversed. Therefore, only emptiness is the nature of reversing all proliferation, so it is called nirvana." This is stated very clearly. This shows that the view of emptiness can
