Because it is a slander against illusory things, it is inverted. To believe that there are things that are established by their own nature is also inverted, because there is no such nature in anything. Likewise, at the end of that immediate quote, it says: Therefore, by slandering the cause of dependent arising, which is the basis for this, and all illusions like defilement and purification, it is inverted to see it as non-existent. Because it is not self-existent, it is also inverted to see it as a thing. Therefore, if that is the case, then for those who say that things have their own nature, there will be the fault of not having dependent arising, and of falling into the views of permanence and annihilation. So it is said. Therefore, those who wish to be free from the views of permanence and annihilation should accept the lack of self-nature and the dependent arising of complete purification as illusory. If the meaning of independence is blocked by the dependent arising that performs a function, and the meaning of being without independence is the meaning of dependent arising, then what have you blocked from us? Because we also want the dependent arising that performs a function. Therefore, if you think that there is no difference between you and us, even if you accept dependent arising as cause and effect, just as a small child grasps the image of a face as a real face, you exaggerate that dependent arising as being established by its own nature, and say that it is the very nature of things. Therefore, you do not understand dependent arising as it is, and you speak of it as it is not. But I think of it as having no self-nature, and I speak of it as such, so that is the difference. Likewise, at the end of that immediate quote, it says: If the meaning of not being independent is the meaning of dependent arising, then what do you think will harm us, and what is the difference between you and us? It should be said that you do not know how to understand and speak of the meaning of dependent arising as it is, and that is the difference. Just as a young child who is not familiar with terms is more attached to the image as being truly established, thus obscuring the emptiness of self-nature that exists as it is, and thinks of it as having self-nature, so that he cannot understand the image. Similarly, you also dependently arise.

Even if one acknowledges smallness, just as an image, dependent arising naturally becomes emptiness, yet one does not understand how one's own essence exists, because one does not grasp non-inherent existence as non-inherent existence itself, but rather additionally fabricates and grasps the non-existent own essence as the existent own essence. Even if one speaks, one cannot make it clear, because one does not speak of it as non-inherent existence itself, but speaks of it as the own essence of things. Although one similarly acknowledges dependent arising of cause and effect, whether dependent arising is understood or not understood as it is through speaking of non-inherent existence and inherent existence, this demonstration of the difference between speaking knowledge and not speaking knowledge shows that if one acknowledges things that perform a function, then those who speak of things say that it is truly established, and arguing about whether it truly exists or not is like arguing about names. Similarly, if one wants to acknowledge things that perform a function in conventional terms, then arguing with the Svātantrikas about whether or not there is inherent existence established by its own characteristics in conventional terms is just arguing about names, because the Svātantrikas also say that it is established by its own characteristics. Those who hold such views are clearly refuted. Such a situation is like the Sāṃkhyas also often saying that in the realm known by hearing, this thing is permanent. If one acknowledges this thing in the realm known by hearing, then preventing sound from being permanent is like hating only the name. Other sentient beings, if they believe that they arise relying on causes and conditions, therefore, clinging to inherent existence that is established by its own essence relying on it, they will become bound. For the wise, relying on the same reason, they prevent inherent existence and ascertain non-inherent existence, thereby cutting the bonds of clinging to views. Therefore, establishing non-inherent existence by the reason of dependent arising is a very wonderful skillful means. Seeing this meaning of freedom, the Bhagavan said: That which is born from conditions is unborn. In it, there is no nature of birth. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is not negligent. The first two lines explain that what is born from conditions is not born from its own nature.
