is not permissible. If it is not established on the object through the mind of distinguishing separate names, but rather through its own nature, then how can the view that this is certain be established? Because this is the time for investigation. Those who say that things arise from two say that the clay pot arises from clay, which is arising from self; and that arising from the potter and so on is said to arise from other. Internally, it is also held that since Deva-datta exists as the nature of life in other lifetimes, he takes this birth only from that, therefore Deva-datta and life are one, so it arises from self; and that arising from parents and white and black karma is said to arise from other. It does not arise only from self, nor does it arise only from other, therefore it arises from the combination of both. This is refuted by the reasoning previously stated. The aspect of arising from self is negated by the reasoning that prevents arising from self, and the aspect of arising from other is negated by the reasoning that prevents arising from other. The *Madhyamakāvatāra* also says: "Arising from two is not the nature of reason, because those faults already stated will befall it. This is not something that does not exist in the world, nor does it exist in itself, because arising cannot be established from any one alone." Those who say that things arise from their own nature say that the roughness of the lotus root and the softness of the petals are not seen to be done by anyone's effort. Similarly, peacocks and so on are not seen to be held and arranged in colors and shapes by anyone. Therefore, the arising of things is only from their own nature. This is not reasonable. If it arises from no cause, then the arising that exists in one time and place must exist in all times and places, or it must not exist at all, because the reason why it arises here and not there, i.e., whether there is a cause or not, cannot be shown. The peacock's feathers would also appear on crows and so on. In short, if one arises, then it arises from everything, or it will never arise. And all the efforts that people of the world make for the sake of obtaining fruit will become meaningless. The *Madhyamakāvatāra* also says: "If one sees that it arises only from no cause, then everything will always arise from everything, and for the sake of producing fruit, the world
