Previously, it was unreasonable. However, once someone has gained the definitive view of selflessness, they will say that all the non-mentation that person does is practicing emptiness. This is unreasonable, because since that person has gained the definitive view, then all the non-mentation they practice will become practicing the meaning established by the definitive view. Then, please state the reason why such a person's practice of bodhicitta will not become practicing the definitive view? If it is thought that even though the practice of bodhicitta is the practice of a person who has gained the definitive view, that view is not remembered at that time, nor is it placed upon it for practice. Then, even if that person has gained the definitive view, but when practicing, if they remember that view and place it upon the view for practice, then it can be considered practicing emptiness. However, how can all the non-mentation they do become upholding the view? Therefore, even if the view is gained, when upholding it, one must remember the meaning established by the previous view and practice emptiness. Merely stopping without any thought does not count as practicing emptiness. Here, our own sect's saying of "not thinking about anything," which often appears in previous shamatha and vipassana and these times, refers to not making too many distinctions of "this is this, this is not that," but rather grasping an object and abiding. It is not intended to be non-conceptual. The third refutation of other sects' views is: Some people say that the non-mentation of not having gained the view, they do not consider it to be the beginning of practicing emptiness, and the non-mentation after gaining the view, they do not consider it to be practicing emptiness either. However, by repeatedly not thinking about anything, before that, after conducting one examination with discriminating wisdom, after that, all the non-mentation done will become practicing the meaning of emptiness. This is also unreasonable, because if that were the case, then conducting one examination of the view before falling asleep, and then the non-mentation of falling into deep sleep afterwards, would also become practicing emptiness to an extreme extent, because the examination of the view has already been conducted before both, and in its own time, it does not seem necessary to be a practice conducted upon the view.

Therefore, although placing the meaning of determining selflessness through the analysis of observation first, after some time, if what is placed on observation disappears, and the mind generally abides without thinking about anything, this is not the meditation of emptiness, so one should cleverly use discrimination, carefully observe whether one abides on observation, and guard it. The fourth refutation of other schools is: Some say that they do not accept the previous three views, but when meditating on emptiness, first generate certainty about emptiness, and then focus the mind on that meaning, and abide without thinking about anything else, this is meditating on emptiness without perversion. Unlike the first view, the mind does not turn towards emptiness; nor does it, like the second view, not remember the view of emptiness when cultivating non-discrimination; nor does it, like the third view, although the analysis of observation is done in advance, fall into a state of non-discrimination that does not abide on observation afterwards. They think that the so-called analysis of observation is just remembering the view, and then only focusing on abiding and meditating, this is meditating on emptiness, which is unreasonable. Because in that case, they only have the shamatha of focusing on emptiness, but there is no way to cultivate vipassana, so it is a one-sided method that lacks the union of shamatha and vipassana. Second, one's own school is: If one has not obtained the definite meaning of selflessness, then all the meditations in his continuum will not turn towards selflessness, therefore, it is important to obtain the view of selflessness.
