In short, the reason for refuting objects in texts such as the Collection of Middle Way Reasonings is as follows. Aryadeva said, "If one sees the absence of self in objects, then the seed of existence will be cut off." Also, in the Entering the Middle Way, it says, "If there were real things, there would be change, but how real things are non-existent has already been thoroughly examined." It says that because clinging thoughts grasp things as existent, these arise. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures that one should examine in various ways that the objects of these are non-existent. "The yogi, having understood the self as the object of this, prevents the self." So it is said. The Lord of Reasoning also said, "Without refuting this object, one cannot abandon it. Abandoning desire, hatred, etc., which are related to qualities and faults, is because one has not seen their objects, not because of external forms." He said many similar things. Since all thoughts are what bind one to samsara, when meditating on emptiness, one should refute all thoughts. To those who say this, one should also analyze in this way: For an ordinary person who meditates on emptiness, is the meaning of emptiness, the absence of self, manifest or hidden? If it is the former, then that person becomes a noble one, because they have directly realized the meaning of selflessness. If you say that even if one directly realizes the meaning of selflessness, it is not contradictory to being an ordinary person, then we can also say that even if a person for whom the meaning of selflessness is hidden is an ordinary person, it is not contradictory to being a noble one, because they are completely the same. Moreover, such a person, having directly realized suchness, does not know that their object is the meaning of suchness, and needs someone else to prove suchness to them with scriptural signs, which is a laughingstock for the wise, because the student has already established it directly, but the teacher wants to prove it through inference. Therefore, such words should not be spoken in front of those who understand reasoning. One cannot say that even if the meaning of suchness is directly established, it should be proven by conventional signs, because the Lord of Reasoning said, "This is a very foolish thing, because it is known as a milkmaid." That is the meaning.

If you say that even for someone who is ignorant of the meaning known among cowherds who know how to name cows, you say that you can establish the sign of realizing the true nature. Then, if even such an ignorant person wants to directly realize the true nature, please tell me, is there anyone more foolish than this? Even if what you say is the true nature, just as a piebald cow, even if it is a cow, cannot be the definition of a cow, merely seeing it directly cannot be established as the definition of the true nature. Moreover, because it contradicts what you have promised, saying that you can establish conventions is clearly running out of words, so I won't elaborate. If, for the person who meditates on emptiness, the meaning of the emptiness of selflessness, which is to be meditated upon, is hidden, then wanting to grasp the hidden meaning with non-conceptual wisdom is a laughing matter. In short, if the mind of an ordinary person who meditates on emptiness does not turn towards the object of selflessness, then it contradicts meditating on emptiness. If it turns towards it, then the object must be either manifest or hidden. If selflessness is manifest, then one becomes a noble being. Therefore, it must be assumed that the meaning of selflessness meditated upon by an ordinary person is hidden. In this case, the meaning of selflessness is realized through the mode of a general meaning, so it contradicts non-conceptuality. Furthermore, even the great Dharma Supreme of the path of application considers that the meaning of selflessness is realized through the mode of a general meaning, while now the wisdom of a beginner meditating on emptiness is non-conceptual, which is very contradictory. If the meaning of selflessness is non-conceptual, then it is easier to achieve than non-confusion, and yoga will manifest, because the meaning of selflessness is non-conceptual and non-confused wisdom. Therefore, without having refuted the object of self-grasping with reason, without having obtained the correct view, merely preventing the mind from arising towards the two selves and so on, wanting to meditate on the meaning of selflessness, and ordinary people wanting to meditate with the non-conceptual wisdom of selflessness, are all greatly deviating from the path of scripture and reason. Second, refuting other views. Some say that without having obtained the view of the emptiness of selflessness, merely abiding in a state of not thinking about anything, we ourselves also consider that this is not suitable for meditating on emptiness.
