Think well and ascertain recognition. Then, if there is such a svabhāva (intrinsic nature), it will not go beyond being either one or different, and carefully consider the reasons for harm in admitting both of these. Draw out the certainty of seeing the harm, and finally, firmly establish the certainty that the person (Pudgala) has no svabhāva at all, and practice emptiness in this way. Then, bring to mind the appearances of the person's designation that cannot be denied, and remember the aspects of dependent origination that are established as the one who accumulates and the one who experiences the results. One should gain certainty about the reasons why dependent origination is reasonable without svabhāva. When these two appear contradictory, take examples such as images and think about how they are not contradictory. For example, the image of a face, although empty of whatever appears to the eyes, ears, etc., arises depending on the face and the mirror, and when some of those conditions disappear, the destruction of both is undeniably present on the same basis. Similarly, for a person, even if there is not a particle of svabhāva, it is not contradictory to be the one who accumulates actions and the one who experiences the results, and to arise depending on previous actions and afflictions, etc., and one should practice in this way. In all such cases, one should understand this. Then, if the certainty that images, etc., are empty of where they appear is the realization of their lack of svabhāva, then the direct perception of ordinary beings will realize the lack of svabhāva, and therefore they will become noble ones. If not, how can these be examples of the lack of svabhāva? If those examples also need to be realized as lacking svabhāva based on reasoning, then what should be taken as an example for those examples? If one examines in this way, it will have to continue endlessly, one might think. To this, some previous teachers say: Although images, etc., are directly realized as lacking svabhāva, they do not become noble ones, because they only realize the emptiness of a mere subject. To become a noble one, one must directly realize the lack of svabhāva of all phenomena. Although they say this, it is not reasonable. As the Four Hundred says: Whoever sees one thing, that is said to see all. Whatever is the emptiness of one, that is the emptiness of all.

. Because by realizing the emptiness of one dharma's lack of inherent existence, one can realize the emptiness of all dharmas, that is why it is said. Therefore, what contradiction is there in realizing that an image is empty of a face, while not grasping the face as true, but grasping the image as truly existing? This is also like how small children who are not familiar with language, when they see an image of a face, play with it, etc., because they grasp the face as true. But old people who are familiar with language, although they are certain that those are not faces, but are empty of faces, grasping that the image itself that appears as a face is established by its own essence is a grasping of truth. And this is also established by the experience of existing in one's own continuum. Even so, the way it can serve as an example of lack of inherent existence is: because it is empty of the essence of what appears, the lack of inherent existence of what appears is manifestly established. Therefore, that is what serves as the example. If the emptiness of the inherent existence of what appears is established by valid cognition on sprouts, etc., then that is realizing the lack of inherent existence of the sprout, and it is not the same as images, etc. This means: These pots, etc., are not non-existent there, but exist as they are famously known in the world. Thus, placing pots, etc., as examples of lack of inherent existence, speaking of things, is also like images, etc., being temporary emptiness, and not their lack of inherent existence. Because, as previously explained, for wooden carts, etc., many reasons for establishing their lack of inherent existence have been repeatedly stated. Similarly, for illusion, some spectators grasp horses, cattle, etc., as true, and the illusionist knows that the horses, cattle are false, and this is also temporary emptiness. In dreams, for objects of containers and contents that are perceived, when awake, grasping them as false, empty of how they appeared, and grasping them in that way when asleep, whichever it may be, although the man in the dream appears as a woman, grasping it as empty of other men and women, it is not realizing the lack of inherent existence of the dream, just like being certain that images, etc., have no face. What was previously established for illusion, mirage, etc., those also exist above the world.
