If, with the discriminating wisdom that seeks non-existence, one grasps at the meaning of mere illusion, that is a fault. If, through that reasoning, having analyzed and in the wake of self-nature being refuted, one holds that things possess only the meaning of mere illusion, that is necessarily generated and therefore not a fault. As it says in the commentary to the Four Hundred: "Therefore, if one analyzes in this way, the self-nature of things will not be established, and so, for each individual thing, only the illusion-like quality will remain." Because it is said that the meaning of illusion must remain. Likewise, when the self-nature of that sprout, established by its own entity, is refuted, as long as the activity of that reasoning has not diminished, even if one examines whether it is reasonable or not, the grasping at the sprout as having self-nature will not arise. However, if one thinks that the sprout's lack of self-nature is true, or if one thinks that the appearance of emptiness of self-nature is like an illusion and true, then that is a faulty grasping that reasoning must refute. If one does not have those, and one holds that there is a meaning of illusion-like existence, and one also thinks that there is an obsession with grasping at illusion and that it must be abandoned, that is absolutely unacceptable. If it were not so, then all the certainty of dependent origination would become a great fault of being without purpose, because it has been said many times before. This is undoubtedly a failure to distinguish between the existence of illusion-like meaning and true existence. Furthermore, when the object of investigation is shattered by reasoning, the thought that it does not exist arises first. Then, the investigator also sees something similar to that, so there is no one who is certain that it does not exist. Therefore, for anything, there is no place to determine "this is it, this is not it," and the appearance becomes vague and unclear. The arising of this appearance is because one has not distinguished between the existence or non-existence of self-nature and mere existence or non-existence, but relies on reasoning to negate everything. Therefore, such emptiness is also an emptiness that destroys dependent origination. Therefore, the vague and unclear appearance that is brought about by realizing that is definitely not the meaning of illusion-like existence. Therefore, when one analyzes with reasoning, one thinks that there is not even a little bit of a way for a person, etc., to abide on the object that is established by its own entity. And, relying on that, it is not difficult for these appearances to arise vaguely and unclearly. Such a person is one who is devoted to the Madhyamaka school and shows the way of no self-nature.

Even if one hears all the fragmented Dharma teachings, the difficulty lies in: deeply convincing oneself that the self-established nature is completely refuted, and establishing the selfless person, etc., as the creator of karma and the experiencer of its results, etc. The combination of these two that can be established only remains on the extreme of existence, therefore the view of Madhyamaka is extremely difficult to obtain. If such a view is not obtained, then the greater the certainty of the view, the smaller the certainty in practice. The greater the certainty in practice, the smaller the certainty in the view, there is no doubt about that. Therefore, there is no way to generate great certainty with equal strength in both. Therefore, one will inevitably fall into either the extreme of clinging to the imputation of self-establishment, as well as the eternalist view and the view of things existing; or one will fall into the extreme of nihilistic denial that things are empty of all functions, as well as the annihilationist view and the view of things not existing. As it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: 'Then the sinless one with ten powers, the Victorious One holds this supreme samadhi, sentient beings are like dreams, in this there is no birth and no death, sentient beings, people, and life are also not found, these dharmas are like bubbles and water plants, like illusions and lightning in the sky, like the moon in water and mirages, some people die in this world, and transmigrate to another world without going anywhere, the actions done are never wasted, in samsara black and white fruits ripen, not permanent, not impermanent, not discontinuous, karma is accumulated, not non-existent, those who abide are also not non-existent, that also having been done, it is not untouched, what is done by others is also not felt.' Therefore, although the person who is born, dies, and transmigrates cannot be found by reason, yet the dharmas are like illusions, and the fruits of black and white arise. After karma is done, the result is not not experienced, and the result of karma done by others is not felt by other people, there is no meeting of uncreated and created karma. One must obtain such a definite understanding. The way to seek this certainty is: as previously explained, first one must clearly understand the common point that is refuted by reason, and then understand how one's own ignorance imputes self-nature.
