Like the gray pigeon living on the thatched roof of a mud house, although its feet have not entered the yogurt bucket, its footprints are visible there. Similarly, it is not contradictory for a person in this life to recall past experiences, even though they have not gone to the previous life. As stated in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses: "Abandoning the notion that cause and effect are the same or different, if the stream of conditioned phenomena, manifested by the distinction of causes, is only impermanent, then it is reasonable to say that the self, which is nominally existent with that as its proximate cause, remembers past lives." Things are not established by their own nature, because they have such and such conditions gathered, and transformation is not unreasonable. Therefore, one should fully examine the inconceivable distinctions of causes for things that are not established by their own nature. Just as one can find the footprints of a gray pigeon inside a yogurt bucket house, on top of a roof covered with many grasses, but it is absolutely impossible for its feet to enter it. It is said that detailed information can be found in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara. Now, let's explain the general meaning: If one thinks that the self and the aggregates are one, then in the twenty-seventh chapter it says, "How can the proximate cause become the taker?" This is indeed a great harm. Because it is said that this person took this body, the aggregates are what is taken, and the self is the taker. If one thinks that the two are one, then the action and the agent will become one, therefore, the cutter and what is cut, the pot and the potter, fire and firewood, etc., will also become one. The tenth chapter also says: "If firewood is fire, the agent and the action become one. Fire and wood, the self and the order of proximate causes, pots, felts, etc., will all be explained separately." And the Bodhisattvacharyavatara also says: "If the taker and the self-proximate cause are one, it is unreasonable, then the agent becomes one." Thus, if the self and the aggregates are one, then admitting the self becomes meaningless, and the self will become multiple.

I, the action and the actor becoming one, and the deed done being in vain, and encountering what has not been done, and the words spoken of remembering birth being unreasonable, there are six faults, so do not admit them as one. Secondly, refuting the view of otherness: If I and the aggregates are not of one nature, what fault is there in thinking that nature is otherness? In response to this, the eighteenth chapter of the "Distinction" says: "If other than the aggregates, then there will be no characteristics of the aggregates." This is how the fault is stated. In this regard, if I exist as an otherness established by its own entity apart from the aggregates, then the characteristics of the aggregates, such as arising, ceasing, and abiding, will not be possessed. For example, just as a horse established as different from a cow does not possess the characteristics of a cow. If you think it is so, then it is not the basis for designating it as "I" nor the object of grasping as "I," because it is unconditioned. For example, like a flower in the sky or nirvana. Thus, a syllogism known to others should be made, as stated in the "Clear Words." If I do not possess the characteristics of arising and ceasing, I will become permanent. At that time, since nothing can be done to the permanent and unchanging, designating it as "I" becomes meaningless, because any entering or returning is impossible. The teacher Sangye Gyang said so. Furthermore, if the characteristics of the aggregates, such as being able to become form, exist as inherently different, then it must be perceived as such. For example, just as form and mind are perceived as different. Since there is no such grasping, I am not another meaning. The twenty-seventh chapter of "Distinction" says: "I am not reasonable other than from what is closely taken. If other, there is no taking, if there is something to be taken, then it cannot be taken." And the "Entering the Middle Way" also says: "Therefore, I am not other than the aggregates, because apart from the aggregates, grasping it is not established." Thus it is said. Therefore, the assertion of other schools that I am other than the aggregates is because they do not understand that I am merely a name, and they also see that being one with the aggregates is unreasonable, so they assert it due to the power of their tenets. The nominal consciousness in the minds of those people does not see it that way because of self-satisfaction. Through such reasoning, one should gain a firm conviction that sees the harm in the idea that I exist as an otherness from the aggregates by its own nature.
