Because there is arising and ceasing that is established by its own nature, the former and later selves also transform separately by their own characteristics. If that is the case, then at that time, at that moment, one would not say, "I, the king, was called Laksanu." Because the self of Laksanu and the self of the teacher are separate individuals established by their own characteristics. For example, when Devadatta remembers his previous life, he does not remember, "I was a sacrificer." If it were not like that, even if it were established as another entity by its own nature, if there is no contradiction in the later person remembering what was previously experienced, then it is impossible for the sacrificer to remember what Devadatta experienced. If it is necessary to explain the different reasons for this, then it cannot be found. This is like, the two, earth and sprout, are also considered to be the nature of being established by their own essence, and other tenets also consider them to be cause and effect. If such a cause and effect relationship can be established, then darkness would also arise from a flame, which is similar to the reasoning that prevents other births. If it is merely considered different, it is not reasonable to equalize it in that way. Then, do the teacher and Laksanu, does that sutra show the two as one? This sutra is to prevent other lineages, it does not say that the two are one. Therefore, in that sutra it says, "If you think that so-and-so at that time was another person, do not look at it that way." This is what Acharya Chandrakirti thinks. Regarding the sutra that says this, some confused people say: The Buddha and the sentient beings of their previous lives are one, and the sutra says, "I was so-and-so in a past life," thus saying that the two are one. Moreover, if it is conditioned, it will perish in an instant, so it cannot be one, so both are permanent. Saying this is the first of the four evil views based on the prior extreme. To prevent this view, the venerable Nagarjuna said in the twenty-seventh chapter of the Mulamadhyamakakarika: "It is not reasonable to say that it occurred in the past. What occurred in previous lives is not the same as this." If that is the case, one being would also become the six realms of beings, because they take bodies in the six realms in sequence, and the former and later lives are also permanent as one. Similarly, the former and later lives are also separate individuals established by their own nature.
