Refutation. Things that can function are not what is negated in terminology. If one considers non-things to be non-things that are established by their own nature, such as the uncompounded, then such non-things are also negated. Similarly, both such things, existent and non-existent, are negated, and what is neither of the two, established by its own nature, is also negated, so all ways of negating the four possibilities should be understood in that way. If all four possibilities are negated without applying such distinctions, then when negating things that exist and things that do not exist, one negates by saying "not both of these," and then again negates by saying "not not both of these," then that is a direct contradiction of what was asserted. If one insists that there is no fault even if that is the case, then we will not argue with madmen. Furthermore, when negating self-nature or self that is established by its own nature on the aggregates, wisdom arises that thinks there is no self-nature or self. If one also negates that object of wisdom, the absence of self-nature, then that is refuting the view of the Madhyamikas, because it is refuting the object of the wisdom that realizes that phenomena are without self-nature. To the one who wants to refute both the presence and absence of self-nature, one should ask this: How do you refute the absence of self-nature, which is the object of the wisdom that definitely thinks that there is no self-nature on the aggregates? In the Root Wisdom, it says: "If there is a little that is not empty, then there should also be a little that is empty. If there is nothing that is not empty, where will emptiness arise?" Therefore, if one thinks that because there is nothing that is not empty, the emptiness of no self-nature does not exist either, then here, empty and not empty refer to empty and not empty by self-nature, which is done throughout the beginning and end of the treatise. If that is the case, then what is not empty by self-nature is established by self-nature, and because there is nothing at all that is established by self-nature, saying that the emptiness of things not established by self-nature does not exist either, what could be more laughable than this? Furthermore, for something like a sprout, the certainty that thinks that there is no self-nature established by its own nature, that certainty only thinks that the sprout has no self-nature, and does not think whether the absence of self-nature exists or does not exist. Close your eyes and turn your face inward and realize it, and it will be very easy to understand. Therefore,

Therefore, it is not permissible to hold non-self-existence as existent. In order to avert the thought of holding non-self-existence as existent, it is reasonable to refute the existence of emptiness with reason. However, one must want to prevent the object of that mind that holds non-self-existence as existent by another mind. To prevent the object of wisdom that realizes the non-self-existence of a sprout is extremely unreasonable. When we negate the self-existence of a sprout as being established by its own nature, we will surely become certain that it is without self-existence. Thereafter, even if another mind holds that non-self-existence as existent, it is not by reason that its object is prevented, but if it is thought that emptiness is established by its own nature, then it can be prevented. Then, how does the thought of holding non-self-existence as existent arise? Focusing on the non-self-existence of a sprout, even if the self-existence of the sprout is not established, the thought arises that the non-self-existence of the sprout exists as its self-existence. For example, for a pot that does not exist, the thought that the pot exists as true does not arise, but the thought that the non-existence of the pot is true arises. In this way, since there is not even a little that is not empty of self-existence, therefore, the emptiness of the non-self-existence of a sprout is also not established by its own nature. If it is said in this way, the reason will be perfectly valid. In the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, it is also said that emptiness is the negation of being established by its own nature. As it is said: If there is something called emptiness that is established by its own nature, then things will become possessed of self-existence. In order to show that it is not existent, it is said: Without emptiness, there is no emptiness, from what does it arise? Just as the other, without it, the antidote arises. It is said like this. If it is not like that, if the existence of the emptiness of non-self-existence is prevented, then non-self-existence will become non-existent. If that is the case, then there will be self-existence established by its own nature, therefore, self-existence cannot be prevented in any way. Similarly, in the Refutation of Disputes, it says: If by non-self-existence, how to prevent non-self-existence? If non-self-existence itself disappears, it will become self-existence established. In its own commentary, it says: Just as saying no sound, sound is prevented by sound.
