Both those who assert the existence of things and those who assert that they have self-nature established by their own characteristics in name are Svatantrika. Although it is also said that Madhyamika Svatantrika asserts no self-nature, here, in order to shorten the sentences, saying that asserting no self-nature refers to Prasangika, and saying that asserting self-nature refers to both those who assert the existence of things and Svatantrika. The way to establish the form aggregate as a subject is that it must be established by the direct perception of the eye consciousness that holds it. Moreover, if it is not unerring, it cannot be established by them, because it cannot become a direct perception that accomplishes the purpose, so it must be unerring. To establish without conceptualization and without error, according to their view, one must necessarily rely on what is unerring, and on what is established by its own characteristics that appears and exists as it appears. In this way, whatever kind of valid cognition the opponent uses to establish the subject, that valid cognition is not valid for the proponent, because no phenomenon has an essence established by its own characteristics even in name. Because there is no valid cognition to establish it, this teacher thinks so, and thus refutes Svatantrika. That is, this is explaining the way to refute the need for Svatantrika as a branch to newly generate the view of realizing that all phenomena are without self-nature in the mind of the opponent. As for the debate within Madhyamika Prasangika about whether or not Svatantrika is needed as a branch to generate subsequent inferences that realize some meanings, it is put aside for the time being. If we explain it in conjunction with the text, the meaning from "When" to "is promised" is: The subject, which is the basis of the proposition, the eye or form, etc., is completely destroyed at that time, that is, it is not established, and this is promised by the wise one himself. What kind of phenomenon is it? It is the object of self that is obtained only through the perversion of being defiled by ignorance, that is, the meaning that is established only through the nominal consciousness such as eye consciousness. The way of promising is: To prevent birth in the ultimate sense, then rely on it as the proposition of the subject, because if it is established only at that time, then relying on it is contradictory. So, although I promise like this, what about it?

If it is thought that it will become like this. Then, those things like form, etc., which are not established only by this and are not the meaning of only this, cannot become the objects obtained by non-deluded wisdom. Because they are obtained by the conventional wisdom that holds false objects, so those are also illusions contaminated by ignorance. Therefore, the object obtained by non-deluded wisdom does not appear before the deluded consciousness, and the object that appears before the deluded consciousness is not obtained by non-deluded wisdom. Because the inverted deluded consciousness and the non-inverted non-deluded wisdom are different because they enter the object by abandoning each other's objects. The meaning of "inverted and non-inverted are indeed different" is this. Explaining this principle is from "when" to "where is the target". Among them, inverted refers to the conventional consciousness of the eye, etc., contaminated by ignorance. The so-called "they hold the non-existent as real" means that form, sound, etc., originally do not have the characteristics of being established by their own nature, but are held as existent by the root consciousness. What is held by non-conceptual consciousness can only be appearance, so form, etc., appear as self-nature. The so-called "at that time, even a small part of the things that have become existent cannot be used as a target" means that since it appears as non-self-nature, how can these consciousnesses establish even a small thing that exists by self-nature? That's what it means. The analogy for things that do not appear to be established by their own nature is like hair, etc. Therefore, they say that the root consciousness that manifests form, sound, etc., is an illusion and cannot be used as a basis for establishing the self-nature of things. In order to explain that non-deluded wisdom does not hold any form, sound, etc., it is said, "When there is no cataract," and so on. Among them, non-inverted is non-deluded wisdom. It only exists in the direct realization of Suchness, and there is no other place. It does not add to the unreal, that is, it does not add to the form, sound, etc., which cannot be the meaning of Suchness, that is, it does not hold it as existent. For example, the eye consciousness without cataracts does not take the appearance of hair falling out.

Like the earth. Transformation in the conventional sense refers to the meaning of falsehood, such as form and sound. Non-existence means not being established by its own characteristics. Such a thing, the non-deceptive knowledge, with suchness as its object, does not establish even a small part, because they are not seen by it. Pages 801 to 900.
