Furthermore, in the commentary on the *Entering the Middle Way*, after reciting those four vows, it is explained in order to establish them with reason: "It arises from itself, not from others, so how could it look to others? Not from both, how could it exist without a cause?" Thus, the four vows are explained. Moreover, since it is similarly stated in the *Clear Words*, it is the case that in the systems of the Protector Nāgārjuna and Candrakīrti, there are self-assertions, admissions, and vows. Refuting the fourth system: Although this system has its own characteristics in name, it seems to prohibit examination by reason of its own characteristics in name, which is not good, as has been said before. It is not reasonable for the Madhyamikas to assert that the three aspects of proof are established in both systems, which are established by inference for the sake of others for those who assert that external opponents are real, as the system of the teacher Candrakīrti. Because for such a thing, a specific refutation is made from the *Clear Words*. If such a thing is asserted, then even if the term "reason of the power of reality" is not applied to it, it is impossible to deny that it is a self-sufficient reason. These will be explained further later, so I will not elaborate on them here. Second, establishing one's own system: If one refutes the system of the Svātantrikas and then speaks of establishing one's own system, then both will be understood, so it should be spoken of. Although much is said about this in the *Clear Words*, I am afraid of too many words, so here I will only show the main ones. There are two aspects to this: actually refuting the Svātantrika, and the way in which it does not correspond to oneself. The first has two aspects: showing the fault of the basis, the subject, not being established, and showing that the reason is also not established by that fault. The first has two aspects: stating the assertion, and refuting it. The first is: At these times, among all the things said in the *Clear Words*, it seems very difficult to understand, so I will explain by quoting the words of the *Clear Words*. As it is said: "If, when saying 'sound is impermanent,' the subject and predicate are grasped in general, but not in particular, then if the particular is grasped, the terms 'inference' and 'object of inference' will not exist. In this way, if one grasps sound as being made of the four great elements, then that is not established for the opponent. However, if one grasps the quality of space, then that oneself is a Buddha."

It is not established for the Buddhists. Similarly, when the Vaisheshikas assert that "sound is impermanent," if they grasp "produced sound," then that is not established for the other party. However, if it is to be made manifest, then that is not established for oneself. Similarly, for any kind of destruction, if it is with cause, then that is not established for the Buddhists themselves; however, if it is without cause, then that is not established for the other party. Therefore, just as here one grasps only the general aspect of dharma and the subject of dharma, so too here one should grasp only the subject of dharma, having abandoned the distinctions, is it not? That is what is said. The meaning of this is: When the Buddhists assert to the Vaisheshikas that "sound is impermanent," if they take "sound that will arise" as the subject of dharma, then it is not established for the Vaisheshikas; if they take "sound that is a quality of space" as the subject of dharma, then it is not established for themselves. Similarly, when the Vaisheshikas assert to the manifesters that "sound is impermanent," if they take "produced sound" as the subject of dharma, then it is not established for the manifesters; if they take "sound that is manifested by pre-existing conditions" as the subject of dharma, then it is not established for themselves. Therefore, one should not take one's own unshared assertions as the subject of dharma, because the subject of dharma is the basis for both disputants to examine the distinguishing characteristics. Therefore, it must be something that is established as mutually apparent to both. Just as the subject of dharma must be established as mutually apparent, so too the dharma "impermanent" must be established by both as only a general aspect, without distinctions. That is to say, for example, in stating an example, before the conclusion to be proven is established, one needs an example that is established as mutually apparent. Just like that example, when the Madhyamikas prove to other schools that the internal sense bases such as the eye, or the external sense bases such as form, do not arise from self, and when they prove to their own school, which asserts substantiality, that they do not arise from other, if they take "true eye, etc." as the subject of dharma, then it is not established for themselves; if they take "false eye, etc." as the subject of dharma, then it is not established for the other party. Therefore, one should abandon such distinctions and establish only eye and form as the subject of dharma. Because the Madhyamikas and those who assert substantiality take the distinguishing characteristics such as whether or not they arise from self as the basis for examination, it must be established as mutually apparent to both, so it is thought.
