Because it is said. The Catuhsataka says, "Existing, non-existing, existing and non-existing, etc." As it is said, the commentary on it says: It has been shown that even after a long time, it is impossible to refute those who speak of emptiness. If you say, "You do not even accept emptiness," then how can it be established as a basis for not accepting anything? The commentary on the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds says: Because it is unreasonable to say two things to those who say that they exist as established, for the very reason that refuting and answering based on the two, the Madhyamikas cannot find fault in any way. As the noble Deva said: "Existing and non-existing, etc." are quoted as four verses. Thus, for those who believe in the imputation of existence where the substantially existing, which is established by its own nature, is refuted, if one says that things exist, it is to believe that it is established by its own nature; if one says that things do not exist, it is to believe that all the functions of things such as form are refuted. Since it is quoted as a means of knowing that it cannot be refuted by the two, it is not permissible as a source of not having one's own system. Moreover, it is very clear that the aspect of existence and non-existence is like the aspect of speaking of two. It is as it was said earlier in the context of refuting the four extremes and eliminating the saying of existence and non-existence. What is said in the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning is said in the commentary on that text: When things do not exist in this way, and the positions of self and other are impossible, then the afflictions of those who see in this way will surely cease. It is said that the absence of things is the reason for the absence of positions. Moreover, it is the establishment of one's own characteristics or nature as things. If one does it for the sake of function, it contradicts the statement that seeing that it does not exist will cease afflictions. Therefore, it is said that there is no position for those who do not accept things by their own nature. Before that text, in the commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, it says: Those who do not deeply understand this nature of dependent arising and who fully conceive of the self-nature of things, if they have an acceptance of things, then it is certain that attachment and hatred will arise, holding unbearable and evil views, and disputes will arise from them. Because it is said that adding one's own characteristics to things is to accept things.

Therefore, these scriptures are not stating that the Madhyamikas do not have their own tenets, but are quoting the *Refutation of Disputes* and the *Four Hundred Verses* to show that they have not accepted other schools. As stated in the *Clear Words*, it should be understood in this way. Because there is nothing to be negated, I do not negate anything. This is said because, among the two things to be negated, if the imputation of inherent existence is taken as the object to be negated, then it is unreasonable to say that one does not negate by taking its non-existence as a reason, so the imputation should be taken as the object of the negation that possesses an object. In that commentary, it is said that there is also no negator, therefore, the absence of these two means that for the object to be negated and the negator that are established by their own nature, one clings to their existence and says, "You have negated this with this," this is you slandering. It is not that they do not accept these two as being like illusions, because the *Refutation of Disputes* says: An emanation by an emanation, a magician by a magician, just as an illusion prevents an illusion, this prevention also changes in the same way. And, if clinging has inherent existence, it will not arise dependently. If clinging arises dependently, is it not emptiness? If clinging has inherent existence, who can prevent that clinging? The rest are also the same. Therefore, that accusation does not exist. Because if one clings to a mirage as water having inherent existence, then it should not arise depending on its own causes and conditions, and that clinging cannot be prevented by anyone. As stated in the *Clear Words*: Because one does not have a commitment. This is also not the basis for not having one's own tenets, because this is the meaning of not having a self-sufficient commitment. As stated in the *Entering the Middle Way*, there is no school, because it is thought that in one's own tenets, neither the refuter nor the refuted are established by their own nature, therefore, if you encounter or do not encounter the belief that cause and effect are established by their own nature, and then conduct a rational investigation of "cause produces effect," then the refutation of the negation will not apply to us, because it is not necessary to think that it can be rationally investigated. This is just the meaning, it is not completely without its own tenets, because the commentary of that scripture says: It will not equally apply to our school, because our school
