It has been completely established that from there, cyclic existence can be stopped. Thus it was said. That itself is also called the grasping at truth, just as the body has dominion over the body, ignorance pervades everything, therefore all afflictions are destroyed by destroying ignorance. As it says in the commentary on the Four Hundred: Ignorance is because of being obscured from thinking about how those things are true, and it is extremely involved in superimposing on the true nature of things. If ignorance is the root of cyclic existence, then it is unreasonable that the view of self is said to be the root of cyclic existence in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds and the Clear Words, because there are not two principal causes. If you ask this question, then the views on ignorance and the view of self, the views of other teachers have already been explained in the context of the intermediate being. Here, the view of the teacher Chandrakirti is: other Madhyamikas consider the grasping at things as true, which is considered to be the obscuration of knowledge, to be ignorance. Moreover, it is also considered to be the ignorance of affliction, as it was said to be affliction in the commentary on the Four Hundred quoted earlier. In the commentary on Engaging, it also says: By this, sentient beings are obscured from the view of how things abide, so it is ignorance, ignorance is the superimposition on the non-existence of the self-nature of things, it is the nature of obscuring the seeing of self-nature, it is conventional truth. And, in this way, the conventional truth is established under the influence of the ignorance of affliction, which is completely included by the limb of existence. Because it is declared in the first limb of the twelve links of dependent arising, it is an affliction, not an obscuration of knowledge. So, what is the obscuration of knowledge? This will be shown below. Therefore, the first limb of the twelve links, ignorance, is the root of cyclic existence, and the view of self is also said to be the root of cyclic existence, because ignorance is general and the view of self is specific, so there is no contradiction. Among them, ignorance is the opposite of wisdom, but wisdom is not just anything, it is the wisdom of realizing the suchness of selflessness. Its opposite, merely not having that wisdom and merely being different from that wisdom is not enough, it must be grasping at its opposite. That is, superimposing as self, and also superimposing the self of phenomena and superimposing

Therefore, the two attachments, namely the attachment to phenomena and the attachment to persons, are both ignorance. Therefore, stating that the view of self is the root of all other afflictions is not the same as not stating that ignorance is the root. As it is said in the Madhyamakavatara, "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self." This shows that the ignorance of being deluded about phenomena is the cause of being deluded about persons. This shows how the two components of ignorance become cause and effect. Therefore, there is no contradiction in stating that the view of self is the root of all afflictions other than ignorance. If one does not understand the scholar's view in this way, it will be very difficult to eliminate the contradiction of saying that the root of samsara is two. This way of identifying ignorance is the view of the noble Nagarjuna. In the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, it is said: "Whatever is truly conceived of things born from causes and conditions, the Buddha said that is ignorance, from which the twelve branches arise. In order to see the emptiness of true things, if one knows well that ignorance is extinguished, that is the extinction of ignorance, therefore the twelve branches are also extinguished." Also, in the twenty-sixth chapter of the Root Wisdom, it is said: "If ignorance is extinguished, then all actions will not arise. The extinction of ignorance is because of meditating on it with wisdom. Because that and that are extinguished, that and that do not arise. Only the heap of suffering, thus is truly extinguished." This is also in accordance with it. As it is said, "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates," it is very consistent to regard clinging to the aggregates as the root of samsara. As for the view of Aryadeva, such as "The body is like the lord of the body," etc., and "The root of samsara is consciousness," etc., as quoted earlier, it has been clearly shown. All the reasons for refuting the refutable that the scholar said in the Madhyamaka treatises are all for refuting the self-nature of phenomena by falsely imputing that phenomena are established by their own nature through ignorance, and thus showing that phenomena have no self-nature. Therefore, various reasons were given only for the purpose of refuting the way of clinging to ignorance. As Buddhapalita said: "If asked: What is the necessity of showing dependent origination in accordance? Answer: For
