Some individuals will mistakenly perceive an illusory woman, who is empty of inherent existence, as a real woman. Therefore, when this mistaken perception generates desire, the Tathagata or a Shravaka of the Tathagata will emanate an illusion to counteract this mistaken perception. Similarly, my words on emptiness, like an illusion, counteract the mistaken perception of inherent existence in all phenomena, which are empty like an illusory woman. As it is said, both the inverted perception and the inherent existence it grasps are to be refuted. However, the primary object of refutation is the latter, because to reverse the inverted perception, the object it grasps must first be refuted. This is also like refuting the inherent existence of persons and phenomena established by their own nature through dependent origination. This object of refutation must be something that does not exist in the knowable, because if it exists, it cannot be refuted. Even so, because the superimposition of believing in its existence arises, it must be refuted. And refutation is not like smashing a vase with a hammer, but rather generating a definitive understanding of recognizing the non-existent as non-existent. Once the definitive understanding of non-existence arises, the illusion of grasping at existence will be reversed. Similarly, establishing something through reasoning is not like a seed producing a sprout, newly creating something that did not exist before, but rather generating a definitive understanding that makes one recognize the way things are as they are. In the *Vigrahavyavartani* it is also said: "Without words, there is also no cessation, which accomplishes refutation." Regarding this, "words are non-existent" means to understand, not to eliminate. In its auto-commentary it is also said: "You say that even without words, the refutation of non-existence can be established, so what use is your saying 'all things are without inherent existence'? To this it should be explained that saying 'all things are without inherent existence' does not make things become without inherent existence, but rather makes people understand that things are inherently without inherent existence."

It is not so. For example, some say, "Devadatta is not at home, yet Devadatta is at home," and some say that he is not there. That statement does not make Devadatta non-existent, but merely shows that Devadatta cannot be at home. Similarly, the statement that things are without inherent existence does not make things devoid of inherent existence. However, because all things are without inherent existence, like an illusory person, they are deluded about things that are devoid of the nature of a real person. Therefore, for those who are deluded by the ignorance of childish beings, who impute inherent existence to things that are inherently existent, this statement makes them understand that these things are not inherently existent. If there is no inherent existence for these things, then the word "non-existent" is also not a word, and it is also well established that it is not inherently existent. So, what is the use of saying "without inherent existence"? To say that is not reasonable. As it is clearly stated, it should be understood. Therefore, if it exists, it cannot be refuted, and if it does not exist, it does not need to be refuted, so it is free from affirmation and negation. Therefore, engaging in many logical analyses of affirmation and negation is like indulging in mere conventional words. Before the general meaning of affirmation and negation of reason and the path has arisen, it is speaking contradictory nonsense. Having shown the reason that "if it exists, it cannot be refuted, and if it does not exist, it does not need to be refuted," while preventing others from engaging in the analysis of affirmation and negation, because they want to prevent affirmation and negation. And the statement of reasons also does not reasonably negate the necessity for others to engage in affirmation and negation, because if it exists, it cannot be refuted, and if it does not exist, it does not need to be refuted. Refuting with pure reason is for the sake of reversing the mistaken conception of perversion, and establishing with reason is a means of generating certainty that is not perverted. Therefore, wanting to reverse the mind of perversion and wanting to generate the mind of non-perversion, one should follow the lineage of reason of Nagarjuna and others, and generate a mind of certainty that is not perverted regarding affirmation and negation. Thus, refuting with various reasons is through refuting the clinging to perversion, thereby obtaining non-perverted certainty.
