The compassionate master, seeing beings oppressed by various sufferings, wanted to perfectly reveal the true nature of all phenomena in order to liberate them completely. Therefore, he began to explain dependent origination. Because it is said (in the scriptures): "Seeing what is not true is bondage, seeing what is true is liberation." Now, what is the true nature of all phenomena that needs to be explained? It is emptiness of inherent existence. Those who are unskilled, with their eye of wisdom obscured by the darkness of ignorance, grasp at phenomena as having inherent existence, and therefore generate attachment and hatred towards them. When the darkness of ignorance is dispelled by the light of knowing dependent origination, and the emptiness of inherent existence of all phenomena is seen with the eye of wisdom, then attachment and hatred will not arise towards what has no inherent existence. Thus it is said. At the end of the twenty-sixth chapter, it says: "Here it is said, you have already explained how to enter the ultimate truth through the tenets of the Mahayana, now you should explain how to enter the ultimate truth through the tenets of the Shravakas." Here it says: "Because of the obscuration of ignorance, there is rebirth again." and so on. At the end of the twenty-seventh chapter, it also says: "Here it is said, now you should rely on the edge of the Sutra that is in accordance with the Shravaka vehicle, to explain the impossible aspect of the view." Here it says: "Having arisen in the past time, etc." Therefore, Master Sangyas Kyang also believes that the first branch of the twelve links, ignorance, is the imputation of inherent existence to phenomena. And it is also clearly stated that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also realize the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, the greatest proof that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the lack of inherent existence of phenomena is that the grasping at the self of phenomena turns into the ignorance of the twelve links. Know this. In the Four Hundred Verses it says: "Seeing with discrimination is bondage, that should be refuted here." The discrimination mentioned here does not refer to all discriminations, but to the discrimination that grasps at phenomena as being established by their own nature. In its explanation it says: "Discrimination is the imputation of the meaning of a nature that is not true."

It is said, and that is because it is considered to be afflicted ignorance, and wanting to prevent with reason all objects of thought that think "this is this" is something that has not been carefully examined. If it were not like that, then for individual beings, since the meaning of suchness is hidden, there would be no way to grasp it by not thinking about the meaning of emptiness. If the objects of all thoughts are harmed by reason, then for the objects of valid cognition, it would be like imputing the nature of delusion as a wrong view. If that were the case, then there would have to be no correct view that leads to the place of nirvana. Therefore, all the hearing and thinking about the Madhyamaka treatises would become meaningless. As the Four Hundred Verses says: "I say that nirvana is neither empty nor seen as empty, wrong views cannot attain nirvana, thus the Tathagatas said." Thus it is said. The object of clinging of ignorance mentioned earlier, as the basis, all the differences established by the power of tenets by those who speak of entities in their own and others' schools, when the object of clinging of ignorance is refuted, everything will be reversed like a tree whose roots have been cut off. Therefore, the wise should know that the object of clinging of innate ignorance is the root of what is to be refuted, and should not only strive to refute what is imputed by the proponents of constructed tenets. Like this, refuting what is to be refuted is not done because there is nothing else to do, but because seeing that the wrong thoughts that have the object of what is to be refuted bind sentient beings in samsara, therefore its object is refuted. All sentient beings are bound in samsara because of innate ignorance; and constructed ignorance only exists in those who propound tenets, so it should not be the root of samsara. It is very important to gain a definite understanding of this. Thus, the ultimate wrong thought that clings to what is to be refuted is the first of the twelve links, innate ignorance. And all that is to be refuted by construction is only imputed on the basis of the former innate ignorance, therefore, all clinging of non-conceptual consciousness such as eye consciousness is never refuted by reason. Therefore, refuting clinging with reason

The wisdom that considers "I" is merely the conceptual mind of consciousness, and it is the conceptual mind that adds distinctions to the objects posited by the two types of self-grasping or by them. It is not to be considered in relation to all conceptualizations. So, what is the way in which ignorance imputes self-nature? In general, in the treatises of this teacher, even for things that are established merely in conventional truth, terms such as "self-nature" or "one's own essence" are often used. But here, for any object, whether it is a person or a thing, it is not established by the power of the mind, but rather it is the belief that these things have some state or way of being from their own side. And, for the objects of attachment that it grasps, the respective ways of being of the things are identified as "self" or "self-nature" from the perspective of analysis and fixation. This is completely without autonomy, therefore "I" does not exist. In the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, it says, "Here, whatever is one's own essence, self-nature, autonomy, and non-dependence on others, that is it." Like this, these are spoken of as synonyms. Among them, "non-dependence on others" does not mean non-dependence on causes and conditions, but rather the consciousness of the positer with an object is called "other," and because it is not established by its power, it is non-dependent on others. Therefore, it is called "autonomous," which is the unique essence of the respective states or ways of being of those objects. That itself is called "one's own essence" and "one's own self-nature." For example, when a rope is mistaken for a snake, setting aside how the wisdom that grasps the snake posits it, and examining how the snake is from its own essence, because the snake itself is not established on the object, it is impossible to examine its distinctions. Similarly, setting aside the examination of how these things appear in the face of the wisdom of the positer, and thinking, "What is the way in which these things exist in their own state?" When examined on the object in this way, nothing is established. It is not that one does not grasp in that way, but rather one believes that there is a measurable way of being from the respective sides of these things, not established by the power of the consciousness of the positer. As the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses says, "Only with conceptualization is there existence, and without conceptualization there is no existence; these are undoubtedly posited on the coils of a rope."
