It is certain that it is not established by its own nature, like a poisonous snake. Thus, it is said that it is not established by its own nature. Therefore, what is established on the object by its own nature, not by the power of the inner mind, is called self or nature. And the absence of this on the basis of distinction, the person, is called the selflessness of the person, and the absence of it on the dharmas such as eyes and nose is called the selflessness of dharmas. Therefore, holding that nature exists on the person and dharmas can be indirectly understood as the grasping of the two selves. In the commentary on the Four Hundred, it says: "What is called self is the nature of things that does not depend on others. The absence of it is selflessness. It is understood as two by the distinction of dharma and person, namely the selflessness of dharma and the selflessness of person." It is like what is said. If it is not reasonable to hold that a person is established by his own characteristics, then it is not reasonable to hold that it is the self of a person, otherwise, focusing on another person and holding that he is established by his own characteristics will also become the grasping of the self of a person. If you want that, then you must become a view of the collection of destructibles, because you do not hold "I" at that time, so it should not be a view of the collection of destructibles. If you say that, then holding that a person has self-nature is the self of a person as mentioned before, so you must think that it is the grasping of the self of a person. However, grasping the self of a person is not pervaded by the view of the collection of destructibles. So, what kind of view of the collection of destructibles is needed for grasping the self? For the imputed grasping of the self of the view of the collection of destructibles, although it is not certain that some sects that are respected by many people focus on the aggregates and grasp them as self, the innate view of the collection of destructibles is: In the Entering, it is forbidden to focus on the aggregates, and in the commentary, it is said that the imputed self based on it is the object. Therefore, it does not focus on the aggregates, but only on the person. Moreover, it also needs a person who is the basis for the arising of the grasping of "I", so the person of another continuum is not the object. What is the way to grasp that object? In the commentary on the Entering, it says: "The view of the collection of destructibles is to enter into the state of 'I' and 'mine'." Therefore, established by its own characteristics

It is not just holding onto mere inherent existence, but it needs to be holding onto the thought of "I." Also, in the commentary on the Entering [the Middle Way], it says, "It is only the view of the aggregates that should be abandoned, and this is only abandoned by understanding the selflessness of the self." This means that by realizing the selflessness of that self, which is the object of focus, that is, the lack of inherent existence, it is abandoned through a way that contradicts the way of holding. Therefore, it is necessary to hold onto the opposite of that wisdom. That is, it is holding onto the person as being established by their own essence, therefore it is holding onto the thought of "I" as being established by their own characteristic. The view of the aggregates that holds onto "I" should also be understood as being represented by that. Holding onto the person as substantially existent without holding onto "I" and "mine" is the ignorance that is deluded about the self of the person, therefore it will not become an affliction. In that way, out of the two, establishing as self only the inherent existence that is established by one's own essence, and taking as self the object of the mind that is merely the thought of "I," the former is what is to be refuted by reasoning, while the latter is accepted in convention, therefore it is not prohibited. This shows that it does not prohibit the object of the innate view of the aggregates, but the way of holding onto its aspect is that it is the "I" that is established by its own essence, therefore it is not that it is not prohibited. For example, just as the object of holding onto sound as permanent does not prohibit sound, but it is not contradictory to prohibit the sound that is held onto as permanent. In that way, in the treatises of the Holy Father and Sons and the two teachers, the inherent existence that is said to be refuted, such as if it exists by nature, if it exists by its own essence, if it exists by its own characteristic, and if it exists substantially, should be understood as shown earlier. And the meaning of the words that show that those do not exist should also be understood as showing that the meaning as held onto by ignorance does not exist. Secondly, the way of applying and not applying that refutation to others is that, just as it is not necessary to apply that distinction when saying that things that do not exist at all, such as a rabbit's horn and a barren woman's child, do not exist. For knowables, although they exist, it is also not necessary to apply that distinction when saying that things that exist at some times and places and do not exist at some times and places do not exist at that time and place. Furthermore, when refuting the imputations that are not commonly held by the proponents of entities of self and others, which the Madhyamikas do not accept as being established in convention, one should consider those.
