If calm abiding has not been accomplished beforehand, then no matter how accustomed one becomes to examining the faults and merits of the higher and lower realms (referring to the desire realm and the form realm, etc.), one will not be able to eliminate afflictions. Similarly, even if calm abiding has been accomplished, if one does not separately examine with wisdom, then no matter how much one meditates on it, one will not be able to eliminate afflictions. Therefore, one must eliminate afflictions through meditating on both calm abiding and insight. This is the manner of eliminating all afflictions. Thus, the characteristic of being able to clearly distinguish the faults and merits of the higher and lower realms sometimes arises from hearing and sometimes arises from thinking, therefore it is a mixture of hearing and thinking. Like this, through familiarization, surpassing hearing and thinking, focusing entirely on the meaning of serenity and coarseness in the manner of meditation, this is the mental engagement arising from aspiration. Here, in the 'Hearer's Ground' it says: 'Focusing on that very sign, one meditates on calm abiding and insight.' It also says that during the sixth mental engagement, one should also meditate on calm abiding and insight. During the first mental engagement, it says to focus on the six bases such as meaning, which is said many times elsewhere to be superior seeing, therefore these, although not meditating on the view of selflessness, are not contradictory to superior seeing. Therefore, during these mental engagements, meditating in the manner of calm abiding and insight, one eliminates afflictions. The manner of meditating on it is: repeatedly examining the meaning of separately distinguishing serenity and coarseness is meditating on superior seeing; furthermore, at the end of the examination, placing the mind single-pointedly on the meaning of serenity and coarseness is meditating on calm abiding. The second and first mental engagements that meditate in this way are the antidotes to refutation. Like this, through alternating meditation on calm abiding and insight, relying on habit, when an antidote to great desire-afflictions arises, it is called the extremely secluded mental engagement. Also, through alternating meditation on calm abiding and insight, when one is able to eliminate intermediate afflictions, it is the mental engagement of gathering joy. Afterwards, regarding the desire-afflictions that obstruct virtuous actions, when one sees that it is no longer active while abiding in samadhi and when arising from samadhi, one should not roughly think that I have eliminated afflictions, but should examine: is it that I am no longer active without having left attachment to sensual pleasures? Or is it that I am no longer active after having left attachment? In order to awaken this, one should examine the object of attachment.

Seeing that attachment arises when focusing on something very painful, and delighting in meditating in order to abandon it, this is called reflective attention. This eliminates the pride of thinking that one has abandoned what has not been abandoned. Then, again, as before, both separately examining the meaning of quiescence and coarseness, and placing one-pointedly at the end of the examination, are done and meditated upon. When an antidote to the minor afflictions of the desire realm arises, it is called the ultimate application of attention. The third, fourth, and sixth attentions are antidotes for abandoning afflictions. Thus, when minor afflictions are abandoned, all manifest afflictions of the desire realm are destroyed, making them not flow even a little for a while, but the seeds are not completely destroyed. In this way, one can be separated from attachment to anything below the peak of existence, but since one cannot prevent the afflictions of the peak of existence, even if they are manifest, one cannot transcend samsara. However, relying on meditation, one can also attain the five supernormal cognitions. These are not written because of the fear of many words. The details are in the Hearing Ground, so please look there. Since these methods of accomplishing the actual basis of meditation and so on are not available now, there is no place to be led astray by them. However, if an understanding arises from these that is not merely a general statement, it seems very helpful in cutting off the wrong paths of other samadhis. Such four meditations and four formless samadhis, and five supernormal cognitions are common to outsiders, so even if one obtains such a special samadhi, one will not be liberated from samsara by that alone, and those will also bind one to samsara. Therefore, one should not be content with mere quiescence, but should seek the special insight of discriminating wisdom, the view of selflessness. Even if one does not know in detail the methods of accomplishing the actual basis of the first meditation and so on, the methods of accomplishing the quiescence or attention mentioned earlier, which are very profound, are explained in the sutras such as the Perfection of Wisdom, where nine ways of settling the mind are taught, which are arranged in the Stages of Meditation in the Middle Way, which have been quoted before. And its intention is explained in the Ornament of the Sutras. The noble Asanga has summarized and explained them in the Grounds for Bodhisattvas, the Higher Abhidharma, and the Determination. And in the Compendium, the two, quiescence and insight, are heard.
