Regarding the conceptualizations of essence and difference as things, and the essence of expressing in words and applying names, if it is said that it is without essence by the very nature of selflessness, then this shows that in conventional truth, it is a slander against the dependent nature of things, and therefore it is not permissible. Because it is said in the sutra that if one considers the dependent nature summarized by sound and intellect as selflessness in name, it is slander. Among them, the characteristic of selflessness is one's own characteristic or nature. The Mind-Only school believes that the non-existent nature is the completely imputed, but the dependent nature has that characteristic, so it has nature. However, since it arises from others, it does not have the nature of arising from itself, so it is called selfless. The Sutra Explaining the Thought also explains it in the same way, and says that all dharmas are spoken with the intention of being selfless. However, Master Kamalaśīla believes that the sutra shows the intention of the three selflessnesses, so in order to perfectly explain the Middle Way that is free from the two extremes, he establishes the sutra as the only definitive scripture. Therefore, he believes that in ultimate truth, imposing self-nature on the dependent nature is completely imputed, so it does not exist, and in conventional truth, the dependent nature has its own nature, so by eliminating slander through it, the meaning of the Middle Way is explained. This master also believes that one's own nature exists in conventional truth. In the Commentary on the Entrance to the Middle Way, it says: For example, a snake is completely imputed on a rope, and a real snake becomes perfectly established, similarly, self-nature is also completely imputed on the dependent nature that arises from dependent origination, and in the realm of the Buddha, it is established as perfectly established. After understanding the classification of the three natures, one should explain the intention of the sutra. As it is said in the commentary: It is not that sutra, but the sutra with explanatory meaning, after understanding the sutra that needs to be guided, one should guide. Therefore, it is clear that the classification of the three natures in the Sutra Explaining the Thought is considered to be in need of guidance. The completely imputed of one's own system is made on the dependent nature having self-nature, so it does not consider the dependent nature to have a self-nature established by its own nature in name. The Mind-Only school believes that other than the completely imputed, the dependent nature and the perfectly established are not selfless.
