Because it is a suitable limb, those who aim for liberation should cultivate the superior insight that comprehends the suchness of selflessness. That is, if one obtains the previously mentioned quiescence, which is included in the proximity of the first dhyana, even if one has not obtained the dhyana above that or the quiescence of the formless realms, one can still rely on it to cultivate superior insight and thus be able to attain liberation from all the bonds of samsara. If one does not realize and cultivate the suchness of selflessness, even if one obtains the previously mentioned quiescence, and relying on it, with worldly superior insight, one abandons all manifest afflictions up to the realm of nothingness, and obtains the mind of the peak of existence, one will still not be liberated from samsara. As it is said in the praise that does not reciprocate praise with praise: "Those beings who do not incline towards your Dharma, blinded by ignorance, even if they go to the peak of existence, will still produce suffering and accomplish existence. Those who follow your teachings, even if they do not obtain the actual dhyana, like corroding the eye-cover of Mara, will be able to avert existence." Thus it is said. Therefore, the quiescence that serves as the basis for the superior insight that attains the noble path of all stream-enterers and once-returners is the previously mentioned quiescence, which is included in the proximity of the first dhyana. Similarly, all instantaneously enlightened arhats should also know that it is only by relying on the previously mentioned quiescence and cultivating superior insight that they attain arhatship. If one has not previously obtained the samadhi of the previously mentioned quiescence in one's mind-stream, then the actual realization of superior insight that focuses on how or how much is impossible to arise, as will be shown below. Therefore, even the yogis of unsurpassed yoga, although they do not generate the superior insight that focuses on how much with the aspect of quiescence and roughness, and the quiescence accomplished by it, they must generate a quiescence. That is, the time of the initial arising is when the first stage of the two stages of the generation stage and the completion stage arises. In short, first generate a quiescence, and then relying on it, with the superior insight that has the aspect of quiescence and roughness, proceed step by step to the peak of existence, and selflessness.

It is necessary to traverse the five paths of liberation or omniscience with the superior insight that possesses the nature of suchness, which is sealed with the seal of the general teachings of the Victorious Ones, and therefore should not be transgressed by any yogi. This indicates the general way of progressing from higher to higher paths by relying on calm abiding. Thirdly, in particular, there are two ways of showing how to traverse the worldly path: first, showing that calm abiding must be attained before traversing the path with the aspect of quiescence and roughness; and second, how to become free from attachment to desire by relying on calm abiding. The first is that by cultivating the path with the aspect of quiescence and roughness through the gate of discriminating individual characteristics, it is necessary to first obtain the calm abiding previously described. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "By increasing that, increasing goes on for a long time, the abiding of reality is obtained by that." It is said that by obtaining the previously mentioned ninth mind, which is endowed with pliancy, the reality is accomplished by relying on increasing that samadhi. Moreover, from the ninth mind onwards, until the attainment of attention, it is the first act of attention. Having obtained attention, since one desires to purify afflictions, cultivating attention that discriminates individual characteristics is said to be the first act of purifying afflictions. Therefore, by cultivating the discrimination of individual characteristics, attention is first obtained. As it says in the Hearer's Ground: "Here, the first act of attention is the very act of focusing on one object, until attention is not obtained, and the mind does not touch the very one-pointedness, then it is the first act. Here, the first act of purifying afflictions is that having obtained attention, one initiates the attention that discriminates individual characteristics, desiring to purify the mind from afflictions, and whatever is accustomed to taking." It is also said that at the beginning of the fourth chapter of the Yoga Ground, after obtaining attention, one cultivates the path of detachment from worldly and transworldly attachments. Therefore, having first cultivated the previously mentioned calm abiding, then cultivating the superior insight of worldly and transworldly, the way of abandoning afflictions is explained in great detail, which is not clearly explained in other treatises of Abhidharma.
