As for practitioners, what kind of individuals proceed on the worldly path? The Śrāvakabhūmi states: Among them, what kind of individuals proceed only on the worldly path in this life, and not on the path beyond the world? The answer is: There are four types. That is to say: all the non-Buddhists outside of this, and even those who are of this doctrine (Buddhism), but who previously practiced calm abiding, those with dull faculties, and likewise those with sharp faculties, but whose roots of virtue have not yet fully matured, and Bodhisattvas who wish to attain enlightenment in the future life, not in this life. Thus it is said. Among them, the yogis of non-Buddhist schools, all those who have attained calm abiding as previously mentioned, do not cultivate the wisdom that individually analyzes the selflessness of persons, because they do not believe in selflessness. Therefore, they either cultivate only that non-conceptual calm abiding, or they only cultivate the higher seeing that has the aspect of calm and coarse, so they proceed only on the worldly path. Although they are Buddhists of this doctrine (Buddhism), but previously mostly accustomed to the practice of calm abiding, those with dull faculties, then, either they do not like to analyze and cultivate the meaning of selflessness with discriminating wisdom, or although they like it, they cannot understand the meaning of selflessness, therefore in this life they proceed only on the worldly path, either they only cultivate that abiding aspect, or they only cultivate the higher seeing that has the aspect of calm and coarse. Inner Buddhists, with sharp faculties, although they have understood the meaning of selflessness, but the roots of virtue to directly realize the truth have not yet matured, then in this life they cannot generate the uncontaminated noble path beyond the world, so it is called proceeding only on the worldly path. It is not that they cannot cultivate the higher seeing that focuses on selflessness. Bodhisattvas who are separated from enlightenment by only one lifetime, also in the last existence, at that time in the future life, starting from the path of application, they generate the four paths in the continuum, but in the period separated by one lifetime, they do not generate the noble path, so it is called proceeding on the worldly path in this life. It is not that they have not realized the meaning of selflessness. This is from the Abhidharmakośa: 'Rice stalk and arrow and bodhi, The four dhyanas and border are all in one. Before that, the liberation part.'

Consistent. As stated, this is the way to achieve the Hinayana teachings, but it is not the view of the teacher, the noble Asanga himself. In this way, whether it is the non-Buddhists who cultivate the path of calmness and grossness to abandon manifest afflictions, or the inner Buddhists who cultivate the meaning of selflessness to abandon afflictions from the root, first of all, the Samadhi of calm abiding mentioned earlier must be obtained. Therefore, the calm abiding mentioned earlier is necessary as the basis for both internal and external yogis to abandon afflictions. Moreover, both Mahayana and Hinayana yogis must practice that Samadhi. In the Mahayana, all yogis of Mantra and Paramita vehicles must also practice calm abiding. Therefore, this calm abiding is very important as the basis for all yogis to travel the path. The calm abiding mentioned in the Mantra teachings is also cultivated by focusing on the deity's body, hand gestures, or letters, etc. Apart from the difference in focus and some differences in the method of generation, it is necessary to abandon the five faults of Samadhi, such as laziness, etc., and to rely on the ways of relying on mindfulness and awareness, etc., which are the antidotes to them, and then to obtain the ninth mind and generate pliancy from it, etc. All of these are common, so this Samadhi is very vast. Considering this, the Sutra Ornamentation says that all Samadhis of the Great and Small Vehicles are included in the Samadhi of calm and insight. Therefore, those who want to be proficient in Samadhi should be proficient in both calm and insight. Although there are many necessities for generating such a calm abiding mind, the main necessity is to generate the realization of insight. Insight also has the common calmness and grossness of non-Buddhists and Buddhists, which only abandons manifest afflictions; and the insight common to both the Great and Small Vehicles of the inner path; and the insight that completely abandons the seeds of afflictions, which has the aspect of selflessness and suchness, which is a characteristic only of inner Buddhists. The former is a part of perfection, not indispensable, while the latter is not
