In short, the former masters who were proficient in the upper and lower parts of the Abhidharma also first cultivated single-pointed calm abiding, but the way to abandon afflictions based on it does not seem to be clearly explained. Therefore, if this explanation from the Hearer Grounds is not well understood, then the lowest of the paths of dhyana and the formless realms is the proximity attainment of the first dhyana. The first of the six mental activities explained therein is the individual characteristic of wisdom. Therefore, it is mistaken to think that the first arising mind held by the proximity attainment is the individual characteristic wisdom. If you think so, it is very unreasonable. Because, without obtaining calm abiding, the proximity attainment of the first dhyana will not arise, and without obtaining the proximity attainment, calm abiding will not be obtained. Moreover, individual characteristic wisdom is analytical meditation, so cultivating it cannot newly obtain the calm abiding that was not previously obtained. As mentioned in the previously quoted Local Grounds, there is no pliancy in the single-pointedness of desire, and without obtaining pliancy, calm abiding will not be achieved, as stated in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra and others. Without obtaining the first proximity attainment, calm abiding will not be obtained. Therefore, the first of the six mental activities of the first proximity attainment is the beginning of cultivating insight held by the proximity attainment, not just the first proximity attainment, because before that, calm abiding held by the proximity attainment must be experienced. Before obtaining the samadhi held by the first proximity attainment, all samadhis are only the single-pointedness of the desire realm mind. Therefore, according to what is said in the major treatises, not to mention insight, even obtaining calm abiding seems very rare. The way to separate from attachment to desire by relying on calm abiding is: merely becoming accustomed to the previously mentioned calm abiding with various characteristics such as clarity and non-discrimination, without cultivating either of the two insights, then even temporarily it is impossible to prevent the manifestation of afflictions in the desire realm, let alone abandoning the seeds of afflictions and the obscurations of knowledge. Therefore, if you want to obtain the first dhyana that is separated from attachment to desire, you should cultivate insight by relying on calm abiding. So, if you were previously only accustomed to calm abiding, afflictions will manifest.

If it is said to suppress the beginning of transformation, how is this not contradictory? There is no fault. Because the previous one was spoken of as abiding within the scope of worldly meditative quiescence and insight. Here, it refers to the quiescence that precedes both insights and is encompassed by the initial preparatory practice. In order to cultivate the higher vision that is free from attachment, there are two ways to free oneself from attachment: through the aspect of truth and through the aspect of peace and violence. Here, it shows how to achieve detachment through the latter path. The basis for this is that both outsiders, who have no view of selflessness at all, and insiders, who have a view of selflessness, can meditate. So, by meditating on what kind of path does one abandon afflictions? The Hearer Grounds say: For this, in order to be free from desire and lust, the yogi who strives diligently obtains freedom from desire and lust through seven types of attention. What are those seven? It is said: distinguishing characteristics, Born of faith, utterly secluded, gathering joy, contemplating attention, ultimate union, and the fruit of ultimate union. As it is said. Among them, the last is the attention at the time of entering the main practice after being detached from attachment to desire, so it is what is to be accomplished. The first six are what accomplish. If here one does not meditate on the meaning of selflessness to abandon afflictions, then how should one determine and abandon afflictions by meditating on its meaning? In this regard, although this path can also abandon other manifest afflictions of the desire realm, it is said that it makes people free from attachment to desire, so it is mainly abandoned through the antidote to desire. That is, desire here is the desire and attachment to the five qualities of desire, so in order to counteract it, one must look at the faults of desire from many angles, and by taking the opposite position of the attachment of desire, one becomes accustomed to it, thereby freeing oneself from attachment to desire. Even if one has a clear and unmistakable understanding of the faults of desire and the merits of the first dhyana, and has a firm conviction of distinguishing characteristics.
