Moreover, when those are placed in Samadhi, if the power of mindfulness and awareness diminishes, except for some occasions such as vigilance, one does not even slightly contemplate, "This is this, this is not this." Therefore, in order to accomplish Samatha, one focuses on the image without conceptualization, as stated in the commentary. Also, in the Śrāvakabhūmi, it says, "At that time, because there is no conceptualization, one focuses on that image. When focusing on that image, one only places mindfulness one-pointedly on it, without observing, without distinguishing, without elaborately distinguishing, without completely thinking, without completely examining." Because among the two, Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, it is said that way for Śamatha. And again, in that same text, it says, "Having thus attained the mind of Śamatha, if due to the faults of forgetfulness and unfamiliarity, signs, conceptualizations, and afflictions that are close arise, becoming a gateway for appearance, becoming an object of focus, then for all that arises, like this: The fault

The expression is the conceptualization of "this is this." Furthermore, in the past, in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra, many sutras and treatises of great charioteers were cited, explaining that shamatha is single-pointedness of mind, and it has been repeatedly explained that shamatha is not conceptualizing anything at all. Therefore, there are two types of non-conceptualization: one that meditates on emptiness and one that does not conceptualize emptiness at all. Therefore, not all experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptualization should be taken as meditations on emptiness. As such, these are just brief indications. One should strive to learn the methods of practicing shamatha and vipashyana as explained by Maitreya, Asanga, and others. If one does not do so, one will mistake some samadhi that has not even reached shamatha as vipashyana that cuts the root of samsara, and, presuming it to be non-referential, one will waste time and inevitably deceive oneself and others. In the treatises of learned and accomplished masters, it is said that when newly practicing shamatha, one should only settle into non-conceptual abiding meditation, and when first practicing vipashyana, one should individually examine and contemplate with discriminating wisdom. However, some people take all conceptualizations as grasping at truth and abandon them all, completely reversing the meaning of the authoritative treatises. Even though they have not found the correct and unerring view of selflessness, they meditate on the meaning of profound vipashyana, which is not conceptualizing anything at all. This seems to be solely the tradition of the Chinese monk Heshang, without any admixture. Look closely at the three stages of the Stages of Meditation and you will understand. Second, the general way to progress on the path based on shamatha is: after obtaining the aforementioned non-conceptual samadhi of mental engagement, should one cultivate just that much non-conceptualization with its distinctive features such as clarity and non-conceptualization? No. Generating such samadhi in one's mindstream is for the sake of generating vipashyana that destroys afflictions. If one does not generate vipashyana based on it, then no matter how much one familiarizes oneself with that samadhi, one will not even be able to abandon the afflictions of the desire realm, let alone abandon all afflictions. Therefore, one must practice vipashyana. That is, in order to abandon manifest afflictions,

There is no other way to advance beyond the two: the higher vision that proceeds by the path of dependence, and the higher vision that proceeds by the path of transcendence, which completely abandons the seeds of affliction. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "Thus, the yogi who has attained mental engagement, having entered into the small joy of abandonment, there is nothing else to be advanced beyond that, there are only two. What are the two? They are the mundane and the supramundane." Thus it is said. Therefore, whoever has attained śamatha or mental engagement, whether they cultivate the higher vision of the mundane path or the higher vision that proceeds by the supramundane path, whoever desires to cultivate it, will cultivate the previously attained śamatha many times. When cultivated in this way, extreme pliancy and one-pointedness of mind will greatly increase, and that śamatha will also become extremely stable. Furthermore, one will also become skilled in the characteristics of śamatha and vipaśyanā. After that, one who desires to proceed by either of the two paths begins to strive. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "Thereupon, the yogi who is a beginner, possessing mental engagement, thinking, 'I should proceed by the path of the mundane or the supramundane,' repeatedly engages in that very mental engagement. Just as he repeatedly engages, so too, as those days and nights pass, his extreme pliancy and one-pointedness of mind increase, expand, and widen. When his mental engagement becomes tight, stable, and firm, and faith arises in a completely pure object, and he has also completely grasped the characteristics of the aspects of śamatha and vipaśyanā, then he begins to apply himself to whichever mundane path or supramundane path he desires to travel." Thus it is said. Among these, the mundane higher vision is: the meditation that has the aspect of serenity and coarseness, observing the lower ground as coarse and the upper ground as serene. The supramundane higher vision, as stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi, is: the meditation of observing the four truths as having the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., the main thing being the view of realizing the selflessness of persons. Thus, having attained the mental engagement of śamatha previously described, in that lifetime, one does not
