Since reasoning that examines whether or not there is inherent existence cannot establish them, these are not subjected to rational examination, as this teacher has repeatedly stated. After conducting rational examination, if reason does not find them, then to say that those conventionalities are destroyed is to be unskilled in establishing conventionalities, as he has often said. If reasoning that examines whether or not there is inherent existence is able to refute these, then these conventionalities such as form and feeling should be subjected to very thorough rational examination. However, such a thing is prohibited in every way in this teacher's treatises. Therefore, to consider that what is not found by reasoning that examines whether or not there is inherent existence is the meaning of being harmed by reason is to stray greatly from the tenets of the Middle Way. Similarly, the noble meditative equipoise also does not see the arising and ceasing of forms, etc. How could it see that arising and ceasing, etc., do not exist? Reasoning that examines whether or not there is inherent existence also does not find arising, etc. It does not measure that arising and ceasing, etc., do not exist. Therefore, the two of being unable to withstand rational examination and being harmed by reason, and the two of the wisdom of the noble meditative equipoise not seeing arising and ceasing and seeing that they do not exist, and the two of the discriminating awareness that examines whether or not there is inherent existence not finding arising and ceasing and finding that arising and ceasing do not exist, by grasping them as one without distinguishing them, not to mention present people, it seems to generate confusion even for some former scholars, so those with intelligence should examine carefully and distinguish these. In that way, I do not consider that conceptual cognitions are more powerful than valid cognition with the object of ultimate truth, nor do I consider that conceptual cognitions harm valid cognition with the object of ultimate truth. However, if one thinks that by examining conventional forms, feelings, etc., with reasoning that examines only that, and if it is not found by that, then those reasonings refute them, then not only does that not refute the other side, but the one who refutes in that way is harmed by valid cognition that is renowned in the world. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: If the world does not harm you, you should refute this by relying on the world itself. You and the world should dispute this meaning together, and later I, who am powerful, will assist you. And in its commentary it also says: We

If, in order to reverse the conventional truths of the world, you find yourself in a very difficult situation, then reverse the conventional truths of the world! If the world does not harm you, then I will also refute you. For the world is indeed a harm. Therefore, when we say that we are in a very difficult situation in order to reverse the conventional truths of the world, it refers to striving on the path in order to purify the delusions of objects such as eye consciousness and the deluded appearances of objects such as form. These are not considered objects of rational refutation, but rather as objects of refutation for the habituation of the path. When you say, 'Reverse the conventional truths of the world,' etc., it means that if the Madhyamikas refute other-powered substantial existence, then I will also refute your conventional truths with reason. This is a way of showing weakness, just as I am able to refute the self-nature of other-powered existence. If you are able to refute conventional truths with reason, then I will also be your friend. This shows that if reason can refute it, then I will not need to engage in the hardships of meditating on the path in order to reverse it, which is what I desire. Therefore, it shows that conventional truths cannot be refuted by reason. Not only can they not be refuted, but if they are refuted, they will be harmed by the fame of the world. Therefore, for such seemingly rational views, conventional consciousness will cause harm, and it is therefore considered to be more powerful than those. Therefore, even those who assert inherent existence, after engaging in rational analysis, if they negate conventional truths such as external objects, reason will only be unable to find them, but not refute them. Some say that the reason why form and other things are not negated in conventional truth is that they are not negated in the presence of self-satisfied worldly people such as cowherds, but to say that they are negated by reason that analyzes them is very unreasonable, because for those with conceptual thought, there is doubt as to whether they are negated or not negated by reason that analyzes them, but for those whose minds have not been changed by philosophical systems, there is no doubt as to whether they are not negated. And if they are negated by reason that analyzes them, then that negation must be done in conventional truth. Acharya Chandrakirti also clearly stated that all births cannot be negated by reason that analyzes them, saying in the commentary on the Four Hundred: If completely
