It is like this. Just as you completely cling to things like time as existing by their own nature, this is unreasonable. But their establishment by dependence is established. Therefore, it refutes that realists desire to be established by their own nature is unreasonable. Because it is said that establishment by dependence is established, therefore it is declared that dependent origination exists. In this way, if you analyze the existence or non-existence of self-nature and the four possibilities of existence and non-existence, you can eliminate countless wrong discriminations. Moreover, for the reasoning that prevents self-nature from existing, there will be no misunderstanding that only existence is prevented. Therefore, for the wise men of realism, the main way for the Madhyamikas to respond is through these four possibilities, so I have briefly explained it. Second, it reveals that it cannot be refuted by statements of harm. There are four points: by examining whether reason can withstand analysis to prevent it, therefore it cannot be refuted; by examining whether the valid cognition is established to prevent it, therefore it cannot be refuted; by examining whether the birth of the four possibilities is established to prevent it, therefore it cannot be refuted; and it reveals that preventing the four possibilities of things existing or not existing cannot be used as harm. The first point is: For these dharmas such as form, in the way they truly exist, whether they exist or not, whether they are born or not, etc., to observe them as they are in accordance with reason, this is called the reasoning of observing suchness and the reasoning of ultimate observation. We do not think that the birth of form etc. can withstand analysis with this reasoning, therefore there is no fault of falling into truly existing. If they cannot withstand rational analysis, then how can the meaning broken by reason be established? This is confusing the inability to withstand rational analysis and rational harm. Many people say this: Although it is prevented by the reasoning of observing suchness, birth etc. exist, this statement is nonsense, we do not recognize it. The meaning of whether reason can withstand analysis is whether it can be discovered by the reasoning of observing suchness. Regarding this, the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses says: Our discriminating observation is to make seeking self-nature the main task. As it is said, it is to seek the existence or non-existence of self-nature such as arising and ceasing on form etc. In this way, for form etc.

What is being sought is whether origination and cessation, established by their own nature, exist or not, not merely seeking origination and cessation themselves through reasoning. Therefore, this reasoning is called "investigation of that very nature," because it investigates whether origination and cessation, etc., are established in that very nature. If, when investigating or seeking with such reasoning, even a little origination, etc., is not found, it is called "unbearable to investigate." However, merely because reasoning does not find it, it is not negated. If it exists, reasoning must establish it; if it is not established by reasoning, then it is negated. The origination and cessation of forms, etc., are established by conventional consciousness. Even if they exist, they are not established by valid cognition. Since reasoning does not find them, how can they be negated? For example, just as eye consciousness does not find sound, but it does not negate sound. Therefore, if origination and cessation, etc., are established by their own nature or established in that very nature, then reasoning must find them. This is because reasoning investigates in accordance with reality whether forms, etc., have origination and cessation established by their own nature. If such reasoning does not find origination, etc., then it negates origination and cessation, etc., established by their own nature or established in that very nature, because if it were established by its own nature, reasoning should find it, but it does not. For example, if there is a pot in the east, a seeker who is certain to find it will find it. If, when searching for a pot in the east, the seeker does not find it, then he negates the existence of a pot in the east. How can the mere existence of a pot be negated? Similarly, if there is origination established by its own nature, then the reasoning of the Madhyamikas, which is certain to find it, will find it. If origination is not found when searching, then it negates origination by its own nature or established by its own nature, but not merely origination itself. As it is said in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses: "Therefore, when analyzed in this way by reasoning, the inherent nature that exists in the sense faculties, objects, and consciousnesses is non-existent, and therefore there is no establishment by its own nature. If these were to be established by their own nature, then when analyzed by valid cognition, they should be clearly perceived as existing by their own nature, and in what way they exist. But they are not perceived, therefore it is established that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence." This is clearly stated. Forms, sounds, etc., which are conventional, even if we allow them to exist, we are only investigating that very nature.
