To consider a dharma that is neither of these two (existence and non-existence) is nonsense. As it says in the refutation: "If the absence of inherent existence is overturned, then inherent existence will be completely established." Furthermore, if one holds such a view, there is no way to establish a definite number of three negations for any dharma, and only doubt will arise. This is because if one distinguishes between one of existence and non-existence, etc., one does not completely negate the other. If one believes that some things (such as yes and no) do not have three negations, then existence and non-existence will be completely the same. Such a view seems to be a misunderstanding of the words "neither existent nor non-existent" in the Madhyamaka scriptures. If one holds this view, just as one cannot say "existent" or "non-existent," one should not say "neither existent nor non-existent," because all four possibilities are stated in this way. Therefore, the Root Wisdom says: "To say 'exists' is to grasp at permanence; to say 'does not exist' is to look at annihilation. Therefore, the wise do not abide in either existence or non-existence." This does not refer to mere existence or non-existence, but rather to the view of permanence and annihilation that arises from accepting that things are established by their own nature. This has been clearly stated. The Clear Words says: "The earlier treatise's grasping at existence and non-existence is explained in terms of viewing things as existent and non-existent." And then it says: "Why does viewing things as existent and non-existent lead to the views of permanence and annihilation? It is like this: Whatever exists by its own nature is not non-existent, so it is permanent. To say that what existed before does not exist now is to lead to annihilation." Whatever is said to exist by its own nature is never non-existent because there is no change in its nature. If this is the case, accepting that it exists by its own nature leads to the view of permanence. If one accepts the nature of a thing as existing in the past and then says that it has perished and does not exist, it leads to the view of annihilation. It is said that if one accepts existence by its own nature, one will have the view of permanence, and if one thinks that the previous nature has perished, one will have the view of non-existence, but it is not merely saying existence or perishing. Buddhapalita also says: "Saying 'exists' and saying 'does not exist' are explained as views of permanence and annihilation. These are the very ones that show how permanence and annihilation arise, such as 'Whatever exists by its own nature...'" In short,
