It is said that only what is unsuitable and without inherent existence are suitable. The commentary on the Four Hundred also states: I do not say that things do not exist, because I speak of dependent arising. If you ask, "Are you one who speaks of things as existing?" The answer is no, because I speak of dependent arising itself. If you ask, "What do you speak of?" I speak of dependent arising. Furthermore, if you ask, "What is the meaning of dependent arising?" The answer is: it is the meaning of no inherent existence, that is, the meaning of not being produced by inherent existence, and the meaning of the arising of results that have the same nature as illusions, mirages, reflections, cities of gandharvas, emanations, and dreams, and the meaning of emptiness and selflessness. Thus, by considering it as dependent arising, it shows how to eliminate the way of speaking in the two extremes of existence and non-existence of things. That is, by explaining the meaning of dependent arising as not being produced by inherent existence, it eliminates the assertion that things exist. And by showing the arising of results similar to illusions and so forth as the meaning of dependent arising, it eliminates the assertion that things do not exist. Therefore, there are two ways of understanding things: one is inherent existence, and the other is the ability to perform a function. The thing that is said to exist is only that which is established by inherent existence. And the thing that is said not to exist is the thing that performs a function. When these two are eliminated, it is because inherent existence is negated and the cause and effect like illusions are shown to exist. Furthermore, the commentary on the Four Hundred states: Again, is there no memory of a past object? Who would say that there is not? We are not negating dependent arising. If it is certain that it exists in that way, then what is called memory is inverted, and only invertedness arises for the meaning. The teacher himself makes this distinction. Therefore, the object of memory is a past thing. If it exists by its own nature, then since that memory is focused on the meaning of existence, if it is established by its own nature, then when that past thing is without inherent existence, the memory focused on it is also without inherent existence; therefore, it is established that it is inverted. What is called inverted is without inherent existence and dependent arising.

The so-called "emptiness" is not another meaning, but the meaning that things do not exist is not a false meaning. Past things are not non-existent in any way, because they can be remembered, and because their consequences can be seen. But it is also not existent by its own nature, because that would become permanent, and it would become truly grasping. Therefore, these past things and so on are not completely non-existent, nor are they established by their own nature. The meaning of falsehood or deception is the meaning of dependent origination, not the meaning that things do not exist. Therefore, if one thinks that these dharmas are established by their own nature, then one is saying that things exist, or falling into the extreme of existence; merely saying that they exist is not saying that things exist, or the extreme of existence. Similarly, if one thinks that the internal and external things are non-things empty of the ability to perform functions, then one is saying that things do not exist, or falling into the extreme of non-existence; saying that they do not have self-nature does not fall into the extreme of non-existence. Therefore, if one does not distinguish between completely non-existent, without self-nature, established by one's own nature, and merely existent, and while preventing falling into the extremes of existence and non-existence, they will say: "We do not say non-existent, but it is not existent." They will say: "We do not say existent, but it is not non-existent." Relying only on saying, one will only speak contradictions, and will not speak even a little of the meaning of the Middle Way. When refuting others, one will examine whether self-nature exists or does not exist, and then refute. Because they themselves promise that a decision must be made between these two, but they want a meaning that is neither of these two. Like this, for any basis, if one examines whether self-nature exists or does not exist, one must want to make a decision between these two. If there is a third that is not included in these two, one should not examine which of the two, self-nature exists or does not exist. For example, if there is color, it is like asking whether it is blue or yellow. Similarly, making a decision between these two, self-nature exists or does not exist, also depends on making a decision between existence and non-existence in general for knowable objects. For example, for truth, just as making a decision about the one and the many of truth depends on making a decision about the one and the many in general. If a decision is made in this way, then the third must be abandoned.
