Undoubtedly, one will fall into (views), and there is no difference from the system that asserts the existence of things. As it says in the commentary on the Four Hundred: According to the way of asserting the existence of things, as long as the existence of that thing itself exists, then its own nature must also exist. When it is separated from its own nature, since that thing does not exist in any way, it is like the horns of a donkey, and it will not go beyond the category of dualism. Therefore, all the manifest desires here are difficult to establish. Because it is clearly stated (in the text). If one cannot understand the four situations of self-existence and non-existence, and existence and non-existence, which are distinguished by the noble Chandrakirti, one will undoubtedly fall into two extreme views, and therefore one cannot understand the meaning of the Middle Way free from extremes. Like this, when things established by their own nature completely disappear, the dharma will also completely disappear. If that is the case, in the emptiness of self-empty nature, there will be no place to establish cause and effect, so one will fall into the extreme of annihilation. Moreover, as long as one thinks that the dharma exists, one must admit that it is established by its own nature. If that is the case, although cause and effect do not have self-nature, it is impossible to appear like an illusion, so one will fall into the extreme of permanence. Therefore, by realizing that all dharmas do not have even a particle of self-existence from the beginning, one will not fall into the extreme of existence. Even so, if one can be sure that things like sprouts will not become non-existent things empty of the ability to function, and that they have the power to accomplish their own actions, then one can avoid the extreme of non-existence. The Clear Word also clearly explains the clear distinction between self-non-existence and non-existence, as it says: If that is the case, if you establish things as having no self-nature, then all that the Blessed One said, that the ripening of one's own actions will be experienced by oneself, will be negated by this method, and because of slandering karma and its results, you will become the leader of nihilists. It should be said: We are not nihilists, we are the ones who clarify the path to non-duality, reaching the city of Nirvana, by preventing attachment to the dualism of existence and non-existence. We are karma, agents, and results, etc.

It is not to say that they do not exist. What then? It is to establish that these are without inherent existence. If one thinks that because things without inherent existence should not function, the fault remains, that is also not the case, because one has not seen actions only in things with inherent existence, and because one has only seen actions in things without inherent existence. So it is said. To this, if it is without inherent existence, then the assertion of the absence of inherent existence will eliminate the arising of the fruition of karma, which is what the proponents of reality say, which is that the reasoning of negating inherent existence is considered to negate cause and effect, and there is no difference between this view and that view. If cause and effect are negated, it will become the root of nihilistic views, which is agreed upon by both Madhyamikas and proponents of reality. However, Madhyamikas do not accept the negation of cause and effect, while proponents of reality think that if inherent existence is negated, cause and effect must also be negated, so they call Madhyamikas nihilists or holders of nihilistic views. Most of those who claim to be Madhyamikas in Tibet seem to agree with the proponents of reality in thinking that if inherent existence is negated, then this reasoning must also negate cause and effect. However, they regard the negation of cause and effect by reasoning as the Madhyamika system and seem to approve of it. In response to that argument, we are not nihilists, but we clarify the path to liberation by eliminating the assertion of existence and non-existence. It is said that the way to eliminate the assertion of existence and non-existence will be shown later. To this, we do not say that karma and its effects do not exist, which is to eliminate the assertion of non-existence. If one thinks that karma and its effects do not exist, one will become a nihilist, but we do not think so. If one asks what is said, the answer is that we establish or think that these karma and its effects are without inherent existence, which is to eliminate the assertion of existence. The statement that because things without inherent existence should not function, the fault remains, means that even though you do not say that they do not exist, but say that they are without inherent existence, you still cannot avoid the previously stated fault that if they are without inherent existence, cause and effect are not reasonable. This is the argument of the proponents of reality, because in their view, there is no difference between being without inherent existence and not existing, so they argue in this way. The answer to this is that the actions of causes producing effects, etc., are not inherently existent.
