If someone says that it is the reasoning that prevents inherent existence that prevents [saṃsāra], then, since bondage and liberation, arising and ceasing, etc., are posited for that which lacks inherent existence, why has it not been prevented? Please think carefully! If the master's view is that the arrangements of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, such as bondage and liberation, are all nominal, and I also accept them nominally, so there is no fault, that is not reasonable. Because, the view of Master Candrakīrti is that even nominally, dharmas do not have inherent existence established by their own nature, and you also accept this. In that case, since the reasoning that prevents inherent existence can also prevent inherent existence nominally, and because you think that the reasoning that prevents inherent existence can also prevent bondage and liberation, etc., it is very clear that bondage and liberation, etc., are also prevented nominally. In short, if you think that inherent existence and bondage and liberation, arising and ceasing, etc., are contradictory, then in the emptiness that is empty of inherent existence, all the arrangements of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are unreasonable, whether in the ultimate truth or the conventional truth, so you have prevented the unique characteristic of the Madhyamaka school. If you do not think that these are contradictory, then the reasoning that prevents inherent existence does not need to make any distinction to the object to be prevented, and there is no correct reason to think that it prevents arising and ceasing and bondage and liberation, etc. Therefore, if the reasoning that prevents inherent existence can prevent cause and effect, then it is thought that those without inherent existence should not have arising and ceasing, etc. If you think so, then: If all this is empty, there is neither arising nor ceasing, then for you, the four noble truths are also non-existent. And so on, from the twenty-fourth chapter of the Vigrahavyāvartanī, the debate of the realists is established, and: If all things, by nature, are not present in all, your words are also without nature, and cannot refute others. There is no difference between establishing the debate of the realists by refuting, which is very clear. If you think that whether inherently empty or not empty, there should be no arising and ceasing, etc., and we do not admit either inherently empty or not empty, so there is no fault, then this is completely unreasonable in terms of the meaning of the scriptures. Because in the Prasannapadā it is said: Not only do we not have the fault of not having arising and ceasing, etc., but we also establish that we should have the four noble truths, etc. And in the root text it also says.

Because it has been well distinguished that those aspects of emptiness by nature are feasible, and those aspects of non-emptiness are not feasible, so it is said. As it is also said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Empty things such as images, etc., which depend on aggregates, are also not non-manifest. Just as in that place, images, etc., are empty, yet from them arises the appearance of consciousness. Likewise, although all things are empty, they can arise from emptiness." Therefore, it is said. Furthermore, if one uses reasoning to refute bondage, liberation, etc., it is not permissible to refute in the ultimate truth, so one must refute in the conventional truth. At that time, if even in name, all the establishments of samsara and nirvana are refuted, then such a Madhyamika is unprecedented. Third, how does the Madhyamika answer this question? If things are empty by nature, then the cause and effect of samsara and nirvana cannot be established. Regarding this dispute, the Protector Nagarjuna believes that the Madhyamika is throwing back the fault that the other party threw over, so he advocates throwing back the fault in reverse. As it is said in the twenty-fourth chapter of the "Root Wisdom": "You turn your own faults into my faults, like a person riding a horse, and then forgetting the horse itself. If you follow and see that all things have self-nature, then you should see all things without cause and condition." It also says: "If all this is not emptiness, then there is no birth and no destruction, and the four noble truths will be non-existent for you." and so on. Therefore, if one says that there is no self-nature established by its own essence, then what else is there? Those who say this undoubtedly do not distinguish between the difference between the emptiness of a sprout's self-nature and the absence of a sprout. Therefore, he also does not distinguish between the existence of a sprout and the establishment of a sprout by its own essence, so it is clear that he believes that if it exists, it exists by its own essence; if the establishment of self-nature does not exist, then it does not exist. If this is not the case, then why use the reasoning that refutes the establishment of self-nature to refute mere existence, arising, and ceasing, etc.? In this way, as long as one believes that sprouts, etc., exist, one speaks of existence established by its own essence; if the establishment of self-nature is completely non-existent, one speaks of complete non-existence, which is falling into two extremes.
