Even if you don't think that the aggregates are without inherent existence, since that mind can bring forth a definite understanding that the aggregates are without inherent existence without relying on others, it can cut off the superimposition of clinging to the inherent existence of the aggregates. Therefore, when one realizes the lack of inherent existence of a person, it is said that one also realizes the lack of inherent existence of the aggregates. In this regard, one can refer to the view of Buddhapālita: "If there is an 'I,' then there should be possessions of 'mine.' However, the 'I' itself does not exist. If the 'I' does not exist, then how can there be a statement like 'this is mine'?" For example, when it is certain that the son of a barren woman cannot exist, although that mind does not think that the ears, etc., of the barren woman's son do not exist, it can cut off the superimposition of thinking that the barren woman's son has ears. Similarly, if it is certain that the 'I' itself does not exist, then the clinging to the existence of my eyes, etc., will also disappear. Then, do those proponents of substantial existence in our own school who believe that persons are nominally existent also realize that the eyes, etc., are without inherent existence, since they do not believe that persons are ultimately existent? If so, then gross things like eyes and sprouts, etc., since they also believe are nominally existent, will also be realized to be without inherent existence. If you think so, then thinking so contradicts your own commitment, and there will be no need to prove that sprouts, etc., are unreal. The paths of virtuous and non-virtuous actions are also fully established on the continuum, and if the continuum is also considered to be without inherent existence, then, as stated in the Commentary Meaningful to Behold: "If everything is like a dream, then since there are no non-virtuous actions and generosity, etc., wouldn't the state of not being asleep be the same as the state of being asleep?" Therefore, it is meaningless to refute those Madhyamikas who consider everything to be unreal like a dream. Therefore, the establishment and non-establishment of ultimate and conventional truths in the system of proponents of substantial existence are completely different from the establishment and non-establishment of conventional and ultimate truths in the system of Madhyamikas. Therefore, if one measures what the proponents of substantial existence consider to be conventional from the perspective of the Madhyamikas, then it will become ultimately established; and what the proponents of substantial existence consider to be ultimately established, from the perspective of the Madhyamikas, will become conventionally established. There is no contradiction in this, so these should be distinguished.

However, the person posited by those individuals and the person posited by this teacher, although the names are the same, the meanings are different. This teacher believes that they do not have the view of realizing the selflessness of the person, because they believe that if one does not realize the selflessness of phenomena, one will not realize the selflessness of the person. Therefore, this teacher believes that as long as the tenet of the aggregates being substantially existent is not abandoned, the person is also apprehended as substantially existent. Therefore, they have not realized that the person does not exist ultimately. Second, actually ascertaining that very thing has three aspects: identifying the object to be refuted by reasoning; refuting it, and whether that is done by consequence or by self-establishment; and the way in which the view is generated in the mindstream based on that action. The first has three aspects: the reason why the object to be refuted must be well identified; refuting the views of others who refute without identifying the object to be refuted; and the way of identifying the object to be refuted according to one's own system. The first is: For example, just as in order to ascertain the thought that 'this person does not exist,' one must know the person to be negated, so also in order to ascertain the meaning of 'selflessness' and 'absence of inherent existence,' one must well identify the self and inherent existence to be negated. For, if the general object to be refuted is not clearly apparent, then the refutation of it is also not necessarily correct. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: 'Without touching the imputed entity, there is no apprehension of its non-entity.' Therefore, although the differences in what is to be refuted are limitless, if the root of what is to be refuted is refuted in brief, then all that is to be refuted will also be refuted. Likewise, if one does not refute from the subtle point of reaching the key point of what is to be refuted, and leaves a remainder, then one will fall to the extreme of existence, and since it generates attachment to things, one will not be able to be liberated from samsara. If one is too extreme and refutes without grasping the limit of what is to be refuted, then one will overturn the order of cause and effect and dependent origination, thereby falling to the extreme of nihilism, and that very view will lead one to bad migrations. Therefore, it is very important to identify the object to be refuted well, because if one does not identify this, then one will inevitably generate either the view of permanence or the view of annihilation. Second, refuting the views of others who refute without identifying the object to be refuted has two aspects: refuting the identification of the object to be refuted as being too broad, and refuting the identification of the object to be refuted as being too narrow. The first has two aspects: stating the assertion, and
