All the commentaries on the collections of reasoning should be regarded as truly explaining the definitive meaning. This is because they thoroughly establish the ultimate truth, which is free from all elaborations such as arising and ceasing. Why are these two kinds of explanations called provisional and definitive? Because the meaning here cannot be led to another place, it is called definitive meaning or meaning that is certain, because this meaning is the meaning of Suchness, and it is the ultimate conclusion to be established. It cannot be led further than that, and no one else can lead it to another place, because it possesses valid means of proof. As it is said in the Madhyamaka-aloka: "What is definitive meaning? It is that which is explained with valid means of proof and with the ultimate truth as the premise. Because it cannot be led by others to any other place apart from that." As stated above, the provisional meaning can be understood by implication from these words. That is, its meaning cannot be taken as it is shown, but its intention must be explained and led to another meaning, or even if it is understood according to the literal meaning, that understanding is not the ultimate Suchness. It is still necessary to seek its Suchness elsewhere, so it is called provisional meaning or meaning that needs to be led. The sutras of definitive meaning are understood according to the literal meaning, so if concepts such as no-birth and no-person arise from those sutras, it must be assumed that there is no birth and no person at all. If it is not like that, it will become not understood according to the literal meaning, and thus fall into the state of provisional meaning. This statement does not seem reasonable, because when the speaker (Buddha) negates concepts such as birth, many definitive meaning sutras appear that are combined with the distinction of the ultimate truth. If one distinction appears, then in the case where it does not appear, that distinction should also be combined, because it is a common dharma. Moreover, that is the Suchness of that dharma, so how could that kind of explanation become provisional meaning? If it is not like that, because the general characteristic of birth is negated, the words of distinction must also be negated, so the definitive meaning sutra itself that explains in that way cannot be established. Therefore, one cannot understand according to the literal meaning by not combining the overall thought and context of the sutra or treatise, but only according to the surface meaning of individual words, so it is

Because this is the word of the Buddha, it will not perish. Moreover, because the teachings of these words can be grasped as they are, it should be known that this will not become provisional. Second, how did the interpretation of Nagarjuna's view come about? So, how can the teachings of the Prajnaparamita Sutras, which teach that all dharmas are without inherent birth or cessation, be interpreted without reversing Nagarjuna's view? In this regard, Aryadeva was regarded by great Madhyamikas such as Buddhapalita, Bhavaviveka, Chandrakirti, and Shantarakshita as authoritative like the teacher (Nagarjuna). The two, father and son, are the source of other Madhyamikas, so early people called them the fundamental Madhyamikas, and others were called sectarian Madhyamikas. Among them, some early virtuous friends say that there are two types of Madhyamikas named from the perspective of establishing terms: one is the Sutra-following Madhyamika who believes that external objects exist in name, and the other is the Yoga-following Madhyamika who does not believe that external objects exist in name. There are also two types named from the perspective of the ultimate view: one is the illusion-like reasoners who believe that the union of appearance and emptiness is the ultimate truth, and the other is the non-abiding who believe that only the complete cessation of the elaboration of appearance is the ultimate truth. They believe that the former are Shantarakshita and Kamalashila, and some Indian teachers also agree with the terms such as illusion and non-abiding. In general, although some Indian and Tibetan teachers who claim to be Madhyamikas think so, it should be determined how the great Madhyamikas who follow Nagarjuna's view are. Who can explain the subtle points? In addition, dividing the ultimate view into two is a way of creating confusion and wonder, which is very well said by the great translator Lodan Sherab. Because their view seems to be that only the meaning measured by reason and subsequent cognition is the ultimate truth, and the object measured by reason is in accordance with the ultimate truth, so it is ultimate.
