thus revealing that very suchness. Those that do not directly reveal it also only tend and flow towards it through indirect means. Until the appearance of knowing that very suchness arises, the darkness of delusion will not recede; if it arises, it will recede. Therefore, mere calm abiding with a single-pointed mind will not purify wisdom, nor will the darkness of delusion recede. Therefore, one should seek the wisdom that ascertains the meaning of that very suchness, the meaning of selflessness. One must seek wisdom without hesitation. As the Middle Stages of Meditation states: "Then, after calm abiding is accomplished, one should cultivate insight, and one should think thus: All the words of the Bhagavan are well spoken, either directly or indirectly, they make that very suchness manifestly clear and only tend towards that very suchness. If one knows that very suchness, just as the arising of light dispels darkness, one will be separated from all nets of views. Mere calm abiding will not purify wisdom, nor will it dispel the darkness of obscurations. If one cultivates that very suchness well with wisdom, wisdom will become completely pure, one will realize that very suchness, and only wisdom will completely abandon obscurations. Therefore, I should abide in calm abiding and completely seek that very suchness with wisdom. One should not be content with mere calm abiding. What is that very suchness like? In the ultimate sense, all phenomena are emptiness of the two selves, the self of the person and the self of phenomena." Thus it is said. That very suchness is also realized by the Prajnaparamita among the Paramitas, but meditation and so on cannot realize it, so one should not mistake mere meditation for Prajnaparamita, but one must generate wisdom. As the Samdhinirmocana Sutra states: "Bhagavan, with which Paramita does the Bodhisattva hold the non-essential nature of all dharmas?" Avalokiteshvara said: "With the Prajnaparamita." Thus it is said. Considering this, as quoted earlier, the Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle also states: "If wisdom does not abide, I will not say that Bodhisattvas' faith in the Great Vehicle will necessarily arise, no matter how they cultivate the Great Vehicle." Thus it is said. Thus, secondly, there are four aspects to learning the method of insight: relying on the accumulations of insight, the detailed divisions of insight, and

The method of meditating on insight, and the extent to which insight is achieved through meditation. First, one should rely on a scholar who knows the essential points of the scriptures without error, and listen to the immaculate treatises. Generating a view that realizes suchness through the wisdom of hearing and thinking is an indispensable collection of causes for insight. Because if there is no view that has a definite understanding of the meaning of reality, it is impossible to generate the realization of insight that realizes reality as it is. Such a view must also be sought by relying on the definitive meaning rather than the provisional meaning. Therefore, one must understand the difference between the provisional and the definitive, and comprehend the meaning of the definitive scriptures. Moreover, this must rely on the treatises explained by a great chariot founder who has become a reliable authority. Otherwise, like a blind person leading a blind person, one will go to a dangerous place. Therefore, one should rely on an unerring commentary. What kind of commentary should one rely on? It is the noble Nagarjuna, who was personally taught by the Buddha Bhagavan, and who was prophesied very clearly in many sutras and tantras to explain the profound meaning that is free from all extremes of existence and non-existence, and who is widely known in the three realms. Therefore, one should rely on his treatises to seek the view of realizing emptiness. There are three points to this: identifying the provisional and definitive scriptures, how Nagarjuna's interpretation of the intention came about, and how to establish the view of emptiness. First, those who wish to realize suchness must rely on the Buddha's scriptures. Since the scriptures are also diverse due to the various thoughts of the beings to be tamed, what kind of scriptures should one rely on to seek the profound meaning? One must rely on the scriptures of definitive meaning to realize suchness. So, what is definitive and what is provisional? This is established from the perspective of what is to be expressed. That which teaches the ultimate truth is definitive, and that which teaches the conventional truth is considered to be a scripture of provisional meaning. As it is said in the Teaching of Inexhaustible Intelligence: "What is the sutra of definitive meaning? What is the sutra of provisional meaning? Any sutra that speaks of the conventional
