Because it contradicts the scriptures of the Sautrantika school, it should not be regarded as a reliable source by those with intelligence. Regarding the order of shamatha and vipashyana, it is done that way when newly generated at first. Later, one also cultivates shamatha after cultivating vipashyana first, so the order is not fixed. If the Compendium of Topics says: Some have attained vipashyana, but have not attained shamatha; they rely on vipashyana to strive for shamatha. What does that mean? This does not mean that they have not attained the shamatha included in the preliminary stage of the first dhyana, but that they have not attained the shamatha beyond the actual stage of the first dhyana. That is, after directly realizing the four truths, they rely on it to accomplish the shamatha beyond the first dhyana. As the Ground of Objects says: Furthermore, from suffering to the path, one also thoroughly understands as it is, but has not attained the first dhyana, etc. Therefore, as soon as one sits down, one settles the mind and does not discriminate the Dharma. He relies on that superior wisdom itself to combine with the superior mind. This is because it is said so. In general, in order to make the wording concise, the nine mental abidings are said to be shamatha, and the four kinds of discrimination, etc., are said to be vipashyana, but the actual shamatha and vipashyana, as will be explained, must be established after the arising of pliancy. There are three ways to learn each: the way to learn shamatha, the way to learn vipashyana, and the way to combine the two. The first has three: relying on the conducive conditions for shamatha, the way to cultivate shamatha based on it, and the extent to which shamatha is accomplished by cultivation. First, the yogi should first rely on the cause that will easily and quickly accomplish shamatha, which is the conducive conditions for shamatha. There are six of these: Abiding in a suitable place, which is a place with five qualities: it is easy to obtain food, clothing, etc. without difficulty, so it is easy to obtain; there are no wild animals or unruly people and enemies, etc., so the dwelling is good; it is a land that does not cause disease, so the land is good; it has friends with the same discipline and view, so the friends are good; there are not many people during the day and the sound is small at night, so it is very suitable. The Ornament of the Sutras also says: The intelligent one

It is the place for practice. It is said that it is good to obtain and have a good residence, good land, good friends, and possess the equipment for yogic bliss. Having few desires means not being particularly attached to good or many things such as Dharma robes. Being content means always being content with obtaining even slightly inferior things such as Dharma robes. Completely abandoning many activities means abandoning bad activities such as trading, and being too intimate with householders and renunciates, as well as practicing medicine and astrology. Pure morality means that for both the Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows, one does not break the basis of training in faults, both natural and co-arising, and even if broken by carelessness, one quickly regrets and restores them according to the Dharma. Completely abandoning thoughts such as desire means contemplating the faults of this life, such as killing and bondage, and the faults of future lives, such as falling into bad destinies, or contemplating that all pleasant and unpleasant things of samsara are impermanent, of the nature of destruction, and that I and all of them will inevitably separate before long, so what is there for me to be attached to? Thus, one should contemplate and abandon all thoughts of desire. These are explained according to the view of the Middle Stages of Meditation, and a more detailed explanation should be understood from the Hearer's Ground. Such six dharmas are the key points of the causes and conditions for newly generating good samadhi, and for the samadhi that has already arisen to remain without degenerating, and to increase further and further. In particular, pure morality, seeing desire as a fault, and dwelling in a suitable place are the main things. Geshe Tonpa said: We think that relying only on oral instructions is enough. The reason why we seek only oral instructions and do not want to generate samadhi is because we do not live in a community. The community refers to the six dharmas mentioned earlier. Furthermore, the first four perfections are the accumulation for entering the fifth dhyana, as it says in the First Stages of Meditation: Tranquility is not looking at desires such as gain and honor, being well-established in morality, having an attitude of accepting suffering and the like, and if one exerts effort, one will quickly achieve it.
