It is not possible to know as it is. The Blessed One also abides in it, therefore it is said that one can truly know. Thus it is said. If tranquility is achieved, not only can it eliminate the fault of the wisdom that properly examines selflessness, but also the wisdom of individual contemplation that cultivates impermanence, the consequences of actions, the faults of cyclic existence, loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment. All of these can eliminate the fault of being distracted by the object of focus, and can engage without being distracted from their respective objects of focus. Therefore, all virtuous deeds are extremely powerful. Before tranquility is attained, one is mostly distracted by other objects of focus, so all virtuous practices are weak. As it is said in the "Entering the Path of the Bodhisattva": "A person whose mind is distracted dwells in the fangs of afflictions." And: "Even if recitation and asceticism, etc., are practiced for a long time, if the mind is distracted by other things, the wise say that it is meaningless." As it is said. Thus, the necessity of cultivating samadhi, which does not distract the mind from one object of focus and abides without conceptualization, is to achieve the ability to use the mind at will for virtuous objects of focus. Moreover, the mind can abide even if it is attached to one object of focus, and if it is released, it is like drawing water into a smooth canal. Because it can go as desired to limitless virtuous objects of focus, after tranquility is achieved, it is necessary to cultivate the wisdom that focuses on objects of suchness and the extent of suchness, as well as limitless virtues such as the mind of generosity, the mind of discipline, patience, diligence, faith, and renunciation, and to avert limitless faults. If one constantly attaches to one object of focus and abides, then one does not know the necessity of cultivating tranquility, so one should know that great benefit will not arise in virtuous practice. Thus, if one abandons the analytical meditation of discriminating wisdom in terms of conduct and view, then the cultivation of single-pointed concentration will be extremely weak. In particular, the means of generating a strong and lasting conviction in the meaning of selflessness is the suchness that is cultivated by examining with discriminating wisdom.

If there is no vipassanā (higher seeing) that focuses on (emptiness), then no matter how long one is accustomed to śamatha (calm abiding), it is only possible to suppress the manifestation of afflictions. Because it is impossible to eradicate the seeds of afflictions from the root, one should not only cultivate śamatha, but also cultivate vipassanā. As the Middle Stages of Meditation says: "By merely becoming accustomed to śamatha, the yogis do not eliminate obscurations, but only temporarily suppress afflictions. Without the arising of the light of wisdom, the latent tendencies will not be thoroughly destroyed." Therefore, in the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra itself, it is said: "Dhyāna (meditation) suppresses afflictions, and wisdom thoroughly destroys latent tendencies." Thus it was taught. Also, in the Noble Samādhirāja Sūtra, it says: "Although one cultivates samādhi, it does not destroy the notion of self. Its afflictions greatly disturb the field (of saṃsāra), like cultivating samādhi while practicing vipassanā here. If one individually realizes the selflessness of phenomena, if one individually examines and cultivates it, then that is the cause for obtaining the fruit of nirvāṇa. Whatever other cause there is, it will not bring peace." Thus it was said. Also, in the Bodhisattva Piṭaka, it says: "Those who have not heard this category of teachings from the Bodhisattva Piṭaka, and who, without having heard the Vinaya of the Noble Ones, are content with merely samādhi, fall into arrogance due to pride, and are not completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and confusion. They are not completely liberated from the cycle of the six realms. They are also not completely liberated from the aggregates of suffering. Considering this, the Tathāgata said: 'Hearing what is in accordance with others will lead to liberation from old age and death.'" Thus it was said. Therefore, wishing to abandon all obscurations and generate completely pure wisdom, one should abide in śamatha and cultivate wisdom. As it is taught in the Noble Ratnakūṭa Sūtra: "Abiding in ethics, one obtains samādhi. Having obtained samādhi, one cultivates wisdom. Through wisdom, one obtains completely pure wisdom. Wisdom completely
