The wind produced by the power of (karma) is usable. When it arises, joy and happiness naturally arise in body and mind, so the arising of happiness is not contradictory. When it arises, the mind becomes clear due to the clarity of the feeling of joy. Therefore, all blissful, clear, and non-conceptual samadhi cannot prove the realization of reality. Therefore, the samadhi that realizes emptiness will also have bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, and the samadhi that does not turn the mind towards emptiness will also have bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, and there are very many, so the difference between the two must be distinguished. Fourth, the reason why both shamatha and vipashyana must be practiced is: why is it not enough to practice either shamatha or vipashyana, but both must be practiced? Now to explain: for example, when lighting a candle to view murals at night, if the candle is very bright and not moved by the wind, then the murals will be seen very clearly. If the candle is not bright, or bright but moved by the wind, then the images cannot be seen clearly. Similarly, when viewing profound meanings, if one has the wisdom to ascertain the meaning of reality without any inversion, and the unwavering concentration of mind that abides as desired, then one will clearly see reality. Even if there is non-conceptual samadhi in which the mind abides without distraction, if there is no wisdom to understand reality, it is like losing the eye to see reality. No matter how accustomed to samadhi, it is impossible to realize reality. Even if there is a view that understands the reality of selflessness, if there is no stable samadhi in which the mind is focused on one point, then it will be disturbed by the wind of discursive thoughts that move involuntarily, so it is impossible to clearly see the meaning of reality, so both shamatha and vipashyana must be practiced. The Middle Stages of Meditation says: "Vipashyana alone, without shamatha, will cause the yogi's mind to be distracted to external objects, like a candle in the wind, it will not be stable. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not appear very clearly, so both should be practiced equally." Therefore, the Great Nirvana Sutra also says: "The Shravakas

The reasons for entering cannot be seen, because the component of concentration is large and wisdom is small. Bodhisattvas can see, but it is not clear, because the component of wisdom is large and concentration is small. The Tathagata sees everything, because he possesses equal shamatha and vipassana. Thus it is said, by the power of shamatha, like a lamp placed in a windless place, the winds of conceptualization cannot cause the mind to waver. By the power of vipassana, all nets of evil views are abandoned, and others cannot refute it. As it is said in the Moon Lamp Sutra: Thus, by the power of shamatha, it becomes unmoving. By the power of vipassana, it becomes like a mountain. Thus it is said. Therefore, the mind not being distracted from the object of focus, and remaining steadily on the object of focus, is the footprint of shamatha. Realizing the suchness of selflessness, abandoning evil views such as the view of self, and being like a mountain that cannot be moved by others, is the footprint of vipassana, therefore these should be distinguished separately. Before shamatha is accomplished, even if the meaning of selflessness is analyzed with discriminating wisdom, the mind is very agitated like a lamp in the wind, and even the general characteristic of the meaning of selflessness is not clear. When analysis is done at the time when shamatha is accomplished, the fault of being very agitated is avoided, and the general characteristic of the meaning of selflessness becomes clear, therefore the unwavering aspect of the mind of vipassana arises from the non-conceptual shamatha. The aspect of understanding reality does not arise from shamatha. For example, the aspect that makes the form of a lamp clear arises from the wick and the previous fire, not from the wind-protecting barrier, etc., but the stable aspect of the lamp not moving arises from the barrier, etc. Like this, if one examines with the wisdom of samadhi of shamatha that is not disturbed by sinking and excitement, one will understand the correct meaning, considering this, the Dharma Collection Sutra says: If the mind abides equally, one will know reality as it is. Thus it is said. The First Stage of Meditation says: Because the mind wavers like water, it cannot abide without the basis of shamatha, and the mind that does not abide equally cannot truly
