It is said in manifestation. The meaning of what is said in the Sutra is explained as it is, so the meaning of the Sutra cannot be guided to other things. It is also said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: After the mind is definitely placed on the object of the unspeakable object and the meaning only, by making the mind free from all elaborations and free from all distractions of the mind, when faith arises in all objects, from placing the mind on the inner signs of samadhi and collecting and placing it, to the extent that it becomes a single continuum and becomes samadhi, this is called stillness. What is Vipassana? It is said that by the mind that has completely cultivated stillness, the characteristics of the Dharma that has been thought of in this way are kept in mind, and from distinguishing and distinguishing very well and distinguishing the Dharma very well, to the extent that the wise and wisdom enter, whatever it is, this is called Vipassana. It is said that it is the same as the former, this is to explain the meaning of both the Sutra and the Lord as before, and to make the determination firm on the previous recognition of stillness and insight. It is also said in the Middle Stages of Meditation: After the distraction of the external environment is calmed, it is said that dwelling in the mind itself, which is always happy to enter into the inner object and is very well trained, is stillness. When dwelling in that stillness, whoever distinguishes only that is Vipassana. And it is also said in the Perfection of Wisdom Instructions: On that which has become as many as there are and as it is, becoming an image without discrimination is the object of stillness. On that which has become as many as there are and as it is, becoming an image with discrimination is the object of Vipassana. Thus, on the meaning of as it is and as many as there are, establishing as non-discrimination is stillness, and distinguishing between those two objects is said to be Vipassana. It is also said in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: World Honored One, what is the object of stillness? The Buddha said: One, that is, the image of non-discrimination. What is the object of Vipassana? The Buddha said: Only one, that is, the image with discrimination. What are the two

It is the object of focus. There are two teachings, namely: the limit of things and the complete accomplishment of what is needed. This is the meaning of what was said. In the Compendium of Topics, the limit of things is divided into two types: suchness and as-manyness. Therefore, as Shantipa said before, both shamatha and vipassana each have both suchness and as-manyness as their objects. Therefore, shamatha and vipassana are not distinguished separately by the object, and there is also shamatha that realizes emptiness, and there is also vipassana that does not realize emptiness. This is because the mind calms down from running after external objects and abides in inner focus, so it is called shamatha; superior, that is, seeing especially, so it is called vipassana. Some people think that the mind abides without conceptualization, without the power of the clarity of awareness is shamatha, and with the power of clarity is vipassana, which is not reasonable. Because, from the teachings of the Buddhas and the treatises of the Buddha's successors, as well as the treatises of Asanga and the Stages of Meditation, etc., the definitions of shamatha and vipassana have been extensively determined, among which the samadhi of focusing the mind on one object is called shamatha, and the wisdom that truly distinguishes the meaning of knowable objects is called vipassana, which is contrary to this; in particular, the presence or absence of the power of clarity of awareness when the mind is not conceptualizing is the difference between the presence or absence of dullness in samadhi, and it cannot be regarded as the difference between shamatha and vipassana at all. Because, in all shamatha samadhis, there must be dullness and clarity, and in all samadhis free from dullness, the clarity of mind will necessarily arise. Therefore, the samadhi and wisdom that focus on suchness should be determined by whether the mind has realized either of the two types of selflessness of phenomena, and cannot be determined by whether the mind abides in non-conceptualization with bliss and clarity. Because, there are countless non-conceptual samadhis of bliss and clarity that have not turned the mind towards the selflessness of phenomena. In this way, even if the view of understanding reality has not been obtained, it is enough to simply hold the mind without conceptualizing anything, which is established by direct perception. Therefore, even if emptiness is not understood, there is not the slightest contradiction in generating non-conceptual samadhi. In this way, if the mind is long
