The method of accomplishing with the six powers: There are six powers, namely the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of vigilance, the power of diligence, and the power of familiarity. How do these accomplish the mind? The power of hearing accomplishes the mind of placement, merely following the instructions of others on how to place the mind on the object of focus, initially just attaching the mind to the object, because one has not repeatedly contemplated and become accustomed to it. The power of thinking accomplishes the mind of continuous placement, because by repeatedly contemplating and guarding the initial attachment to the object, one initially gains the ability to maintain continuity to some extent. The power of mindfulness accomplishes the mind of reinstatement and the mind of close placement, because when the mind wanders and becomes distracted from the object, one remembers the previous object and gathers the mind inward, and from the beginning, one generates the power of mindfulness, preventing the mind from wandering from the object. The power of vigilance accomplishes the mind of taming and the mind of pacification, because by recognizing with vigilance the faults of being drawn to the characteristics of discursive thoughts and secondary defilements, and viewing them as faults, one does not give them the opportunity to arise. The power of diligence accomplishes the mind of complete pacification and the mind of one-pointedness, because even subtle discursive thoughts and secondary defilements are abandoned with effort and not accepted, and by doing so, agitation and dullness, etc., cannot interrupt the samadhi, thus accomplishing a continuously arising samadhi. The power of familiarity accomplishes the mind of equipoise, because through the power of extreme habituation to the previous factors, a samadhi arises that effortlessly and naturally enters. These are the views of the place of hearing, and should be understood as such. Even if other explanations appear, they should not be readily trusted. If one attains the ninth mind, for example, when one is very accustomed to reciting texts, etc., initially the motivation to recite arises and one begins to recite, even if the mind wanders elsewhere in the middle, the recitation itself does not stop, but proceeds effortlessly. Similarly, initially, with mindfulness, one places the mind on the object once

Then, even if mindfulness is not constantly cultivated, a state will arise where the samadhi does not cease and can continuously enter for a long time. If mindfulness is constantly cultivated, there is no need for the effort of cultivation, so it is called effortless or without exertion. To generate it, one must first diligently cultivate with mindfulness and awareness, so that unfavorable factors such as dullness and agitation cannot obstruct it, and a samadhi that can be maintained for a long time must arise. This is also the eighth consciousness. This eighth and ninth consciousness are similar in that unfavorable factors of samadhi such as dullness and agitation cannot obstruct them, but this eighth consciousness must be constantly cultivated with mindfulness and awareness, so it is called effortful or with exertion. To generate it, one must prevent even subtle phenomena such as dullness and agitation from arising, so the seventh consciousness is needed. To generate it, one must recognize that being distracted by conceptual thoughts and near afflictions is a fault, so one needs strong awareness that does not get distracted by them, so the fifth and sixth consciousnesses are needed. The reason these two consciousnesses are needed is because they have become the power of awareness. To generate such samadhi, even if the mind is slightly distracted, one must quickly recall the object of focus, and one needs mindfulness that does not allow the mind to wander from the object of focus from the beginning, so the third and fourth consciousnesses are needed. The reason these two consciousnesses are needed is because they are accomplished by these two mindfulnesses. To generate it, one first needs to place the mind on the object of focus, and one needs to not let the continuity of that placement be distracted, so the first two consciousnesses need to arise first. Thus, in short, one must first follow the instructions one has heard and properly settle one's mind. Then, one must repeatedly contemplate that settled mind, and extend the continuity by being able to sustain it slightly. Then, if mindfulness weakens and one becomes distracted, one must quickly gather oneself and quickly recall the object of focus. Then, one must also generate strong mindfulness, and generate the power of mindfulness that does not wander from the object of focus from the beginning. After accomplishing strong mindfulness, one generates strong awareness that is vigilant and protective by seeing the faults of dullness and agitation that distract from the object of focus. Then, distracted by subtle forgetfulness
