It is an analogous state, but not actual quiescence, so it is called "mental engagement analogous to quiescence." As the Explanation of Intention Sutra says, "World Honored One, until that Bodhisattva has not obtained physical pliancy and mental pliancy while mentally engaging with the mind focused on an object, what should that mental engagement be called?" Maitreya said, "It is not quiescence, but it should be called mental engagement similar to and in accordance with quiescence." This is clearly stated in the sutra. Furthermore, the Ornament of the Sutras says, "Through habituation with that, one no longer becomes scattered. From that, the body and mind obtain great pliancy, together with mental engagement." It is said that mental engagement here refers to quiescence, as will be explained below from the Hearer's Ground. The Intermediate Stages of Meditation also says, "Having thus habituated quiescence, when the body and mind become pliant, and when the mind becomes master of the object as desired, at that time, one should know that quiescence is accomplished." It is said that to abide in the object, it is necessary to obtain both mastery and pliancy. Therefore, the First Stages of Meditation says, "When the mind engages with that object without effort, and remains as long as desired, at that time, one should know that quiescence is perfected." This also refers to having pliancy, as it is clearly stated in the Intermediate Stages of Meditation. Furthermore, the equanimity among the eight abandoning efforts explained in the Middle Extremes is the same as the ninth mind here, but that is not enough, because it is also said that pliancy arises from that. The Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom also says, "This Bodhisattva, in a solitary place, mentally engages with the meaning as thought, abandoning mental speech, and repeatedly engages with the mind appearing in that way. Until physical and mental pliancy have not arisen, it is mental engagement in accordance with quiescence, and when it has arisen, it is called quiescence." This is very clearly stated. All of these are determinations of the meaning of the Sutra Unraveling the Intention. So, when pliancy has not arisen,

If asked, by which realm is the samadhi of desire realm gathered? The samadhi is gathered by the realm of desire, it is gathered by any of the nine realms of the three realms, because it is not the preliminary stage of the first dhyana and above. If the preliminary stage is attained, then shamatha and vipassana must be attained. Although there is such a samadhi in the realm of desire, it is not a realm of meditative absorption. The reason why it is not called a realm of meditative absorption is that it is not accomplished by non-regret, supreme joy, and great pliancy. As it is said in the "Reality of the Realm": "Why is only that called the realm of meditative absorption? Why is it not the one-pointedness of the desire realm? Because this samadhi is accomplished by non-regret, supreme joy, great pliancy, and happiness. But the conduct in the desire realm is not like that, and it is not that there is no mindfulness of the true Dharma in the desire realm." Thus it is said. Therefore, if great pliancy is not attained, even if mindfulness is not continuously cultivated, the mind will naturally go without distraction. Moreover, this samadhi seems to be able to merge with all activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, and is called the one-pointedness of the desire mind. It should be understood that it cannot be regarded as actual shamatha. Then, what is the way to attain great pliancy? And how does one enter shamatha after attaining it? Regarding this, great pliancy is described in the Compendium of Topics: "What is great pliancy? It is the state of being serviceable of body and mind in order to cut off the continuity of the afflictions of body and mind. It has the function of eliminating all obscurations." It should be understood as it is said. The afflictions of body and mind are that the body and mind cannot be used as one wishes in accomplishing virtuous deeds. The antidote to that is the great pliancy of body and mind, because it is separated from the two afflictions of body and mind, so the body and mind become very serviceable in using them for virtuous deeds. That is to say, the afflictions of the body obstruct the joy of abandoning afflictions and turn towards the side of afflictions. When striving to abandon afflictions, the body becomes heavy, etc., separated from the state of being unserviceable, and the body becomes light.
