The characteristic of this object of focus is, as it says in that very text: "What is the characteristic of equanimity? It is that which makes the mind equanimous with whatever object of focus, and does not exert excessive effort on that very object of focus." As it is said. Also, the time for meditating on equanimity is, as it says in that very text: "What is the time for equanimity? It is when the mind is neither dull nor excited in the aspects of calm abiding and insight." As it is said. Thus, the ways to generate flawless samadhi as explained above are based on what the venerable Maitreya said in the Differentiation of the Middle and the Extremes, as it is said: "From abiding therein, capability itself, all meanings will be attained. Abandoning five faults, cultivating eight applications, arises from the cause of reliance. Laziness and instructions, forgetting, dullness, and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults. Abiding and abiding therein, cause and result itself, not forgetting the object of focus, understanding dullness and excitement, abandoning them, manifest application, when peaceful, entering accordingly." As it is said. Therein, abiding therein means exerting effort to eliminate unfavorable factors, which is abiding in that (samadhi). From that, a samadhi arises in which the mind is capable. That is also the foot or place of miraculous powers that accomplishes all meanings such as clairvoyance, so it accomplishes all meanings. So, how does one generate such a samadhi? It arises from relying on the cause of the eight applications that are cultivated in order to abandon the five faults. The five faults are: during the practice, laziness is a fault, because one does not practice samadhi. When exerting effort in samadhi, forgetting the instructions is a fault, because if one forgets the object of focus, the mind cannot be placed evenly on the object of focus. During even placement, dullness and excitement are faults, because these two make the mind incapable. When dullness and excitement arise, not making effort is a fault, because one does not pacify these two. When free from dullness and excitement, the mind of application is a fault. If dullness and excitement are combined into one, there are five faults, but if separated, there are six faults.

Furthermore, it is also mentioned in treatises such as the Stages of Meditation. Regarding the antidotes to these (obstacles), there are eight types of abandoning effort, of which four are antidotes to laziness: faith, aspiration, exertion, and pliancy. Then, the antidotes to forgetfulness, dullness and excitement, non-application, and application are, in order: mindfulness, awareness that discerns dullness and excitement, application of application, and equanimity that allows for settling. These have been explained in detail before. These are the supreme instructions for accomplishing samadhi. Therefore, the three Stages of Meditation by the great scholar Kamalashila, as well as other great Indian scholars, have been taught on many occasions for accomplishing samadhi. In the commentary on the Lamp for the Path, it is also taught in the context of cultivating calm abiding. Although the upper Lamrim masters have also mentioned it briefly, it seems that those who wish to practice meditation do not know how to begin, so it has been thoroughly established in detail. This is the single-pointed samadhi, which is cultivated by keeping it free from dullness and excitement through mindfulness and awareness, and is common to all instructions. Therefore, do not think that this is a special Dharma of the Characteristic Vehicle and that mantra is not needed, because it is also taught in the tantras of Highest Yoga, so it is common. As it is said, in the second section of the first chapter of the Glorious Samputa Tantra: "The samadhi of desire, possessing the effort of abandonment, the miraculous foot abiding in solitude, abiding in detachment, abiding in cessation, completely transformed by correct abandonment, with that desire, not extremely depressed, not uplifted, meditate." Likewise, it is also taught for the samadhi of diligence, investigation, and mind. The previously mentioned serviceable samadhi becomes the basis for accomplishing qualities such as miracles, like a foot, so it is the foot of miracles. There are four doors to accomplishing it, namely, obtaining it through strong desire, obtaining it through long-lasting diligence, and obtaining samadhi by discriminating the object. From the samadhi of desire to the samadhi of diligence and investigation, it is said that the seed of the previous samadhi exists in the mind.
