Meditate correctly! When you meditate on the appearance of perception on the path of calm abiding and insight in this way, even if the faith in the object is not clear from the beginning and the appearance is small, the cause and condition of becoming accustomed to meditation will make the faith in that object clear and the appearance great. If it is clear and the appearance is great from the beginning, then it will become even clearer and the appearance even greater. Therefore, even if the object is clear from the beginning, one should meditate, let alone if it is not clear. As for what kind of appearance should be taken, it is also said therein: Take the appearance of light from the light of a lamp, or from the light of a fire, or from the mandala of the sun! As it is said. Meditating on the appearance of perception should be done not only during the time of samadhi, but also at other times. Agitation is when the mind flows towards objects such as form and sound from the perspective of attachment. For this, one should bring to mind the object of aversion, which is the cause of gathering the mind inward. In this way, as soon as agitation subsides, the mind is placed evenly on the previous object. The first stage of the Stages of Meditation says: When one remembers previous agitation and playfulness, and sees the mind agitated from time to time, one should pacify the agitation by bringing to mind impermanence and other things that cause aversion. Then, one should also strive to let the mind enter that object without any effort. Also, the Essence of Madhyamaka says: Agitation, pacify by bringing to mind impermanence and so on. Also, distraction, gather by looking at the faults of the sign of distraction. Also, the Compendium of Trainings says: If one becomes agitated, one should thoroughly pacify it by bringing to mind impermanence. Therefore, if the agitation is strong or lasts for a long time, it is important to temporarily let go of meditation and cultivate renunciation, rather than repeatedly gathering and settling the mind. For agitation that is not so strong, one should gather the distracted mind and place it on the object. The Condensed Perfection of Wisdom says: When the mind becomes agitated, it should be turned back by the method of calm abiding. Also, the Sutra says: Settle the mind well!

As stated, the antidote to agitation is described in the "Grounds" section. Generally speaking, if the mind is agitated, one should focus intently on the object of meditation; if the mind is sinking, one should focus intently on a joyful object. As stated in the "Hearer's Ground": "When the mind is thus clearly gathered inward, and one sees that it has become萎靡 or suspects that it will become 萎靡, then, with any sign of increase or any intervening sign, one should cause it to increase and cause it to rejoice. This is causing the mind to increase. How does one cause it to abide? At the time of increase, when one sees that the mind is agitated or suspects that it will be agitated, one should also cause the mind to be clearly gathered inward, and cause it to abide in quiescence." Thus it is said. For an agitated mind, one should not attend to a joyful object, for that is a cause of outward distraction. Identifying the causes of sinking and agitation: As stated in the "Essence of the Ground": "What is the sign of sinking? It is not guarding the sense doors, not knowing the measure of food, not striving in the practice of not sleeping during the upper and lower parts of the night, not abiding in mindfulness, engaging in foolish conduct, excessive sleep, not knowing the means, having desire, diligence, mind, investigation, and familiarity with quiescence accompanied by laziness, attending to one aspect of quiescence without having completely purified quiescence, the mind being like darkness, and not liking to focus on the object of meditation." Thus it is said. The sign of sinking here should be understood as the cause of sinking. Among them, "having laziness" also applies to diligence, mind, and investigation. Also, in that same text it says: "What is the sign of agitation? As before, the four, such as not guarding the sense doors, and engaging in desire, having a nature of not being nearly pacified, the mind not being weary, not knowing the means, as before, having desire, etc., accompanied by excessive increase, not being familiar with diligence, cultivating one aspect of it without having purified increase, and the mind being distracted by any dharma that is in accordance with agitation, such as thoughts of relatives." Thus it is said. The sign of agitation is the cause of agitation. Excessive increase
