It seems very important, because it seems easy to mistake this for flawless samadhi. Therefore, one should carefully examine it with meticulous intelligence, based on experience, as stated in the Stages of Meditation, and recognize it. The method for generating awareness to recognize sinking and excitement is: it is not enough to merely have an understanding of sinking and excitement. During meditation, one needs to be able to generate awareness that knows exactly whether sinking and excitement have arisen or not. That is, by gradually generating powerful awareness, let alone being able to generate awareness that immediately recognizes sinking and excitement the moment they arise, one needs to generate awareness of wisdom from the point of preparing to arise, even before they actually arise. In the latter two Stages of Meditation, it says, "If you see that the mind is sinking or suspect that it is sinking," and "If you see that the mind is excited or suspect that it is excited." Until such awareness is generated, even if one concludes that flawless meditation without sinking and excitement has occurred from here to there, one will not progress, because even if sinking and excitement have occurred, one will not be able to ascertain it, because powerful awareness has not been generated. Similarly, in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes, it says, "Understanding sinking and excitement," because awareness is needed to understand sinking and excitement. Thus, if awareness that makes it impossible not to know when sinking and excitement arise is not generated, even if one meditates for a long time, one will not feel the sinking and excitement as they arise, and subtle sinking and excitement will pass the time. So, how does one generate that awareness? For this, the previously shown method of cultivating mindfulness is one of the most important factors. Thus, if one can generate continuous mindfulness, one can prevent forgetting the object and wandering away, thereby preventing not feeling the arising of sinking and excitement for a long time, and therefore it is easy to understand sinking and excitement. If one compares the length of time of recognizing sinking and excitement when mindfulness is diminished and recognizing sinking and excitement when mindfulness is not diminished, it will be very clear. Considering this, it is also said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior, "When mindfulness turns from the sense gate to the meaning of guarding, then awareness will come," and in the Commentary on the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes, it is also said, "Awareness is mindfulness."

If one forgets, one cannot recognize agitation and dullness. The meaning of "which is to abide in mindfulness, possessing vigilance." Therefore, it is said, "If mindfulness is not forgotten." Thus it is said. One reason is that the way of cultivating vigilance is unique. That is, the mind focuses on the apprehended aspect of a deity image, etc., or focuses on the apprehended aspect of feeling, awareness, clarity, etc., and as previously explained, with the aid of mindfulness, one keeps watch to see if it wanders elsewhere, thereby holding the mind. This is considered the key to cultivating vigilance. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "The state of body and mind, should be examined again and again, in short, that is, the characteristic of guarding vigilance." It is just so. Therefore, this cultivates the vigilance of awareness from the preparation stage of generating agitation and dullness. By the method of relying on mindfulness, one can prevent forgetfulness that arises from distraction. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly distinguish the object of focus. If not, all these thoughts are mixed together, without the concept of distinguishing the object, and if one cultivates as they do nowadays, then the result of accomplishing with vague causes, the samadhi, may also turn out like that. Therefore, it is very important to rely on great, reliable scriptures, analyze with extremely detailed wisdom, and establish it through practice. Do not rely solely on perseverance. As it says in the Compendium of Perfections: "Merely exerting effort leads to exhaustion. If guided by the friend of wisdom, great things are accomplished." Therefore, it is said. Second, even if one recognizes it, one does not strive to abandon it, but relies on the antidote. As previously explained, by properly cultivating mindfulness and vigilance, extremely powerful mindfulness and vigilance arise, so that even very subtle agitation and dullness can be recognized by vigilance. Even if there is no fault of not recognizing the arising of agitation and dullness, not making the effort to prevent them as soon as they arise, but accepting their indulgence or inaction, is a very great fault in samadhi. If one does so, the mind will be unrestrained, and therefore it will be very difficult to generate samadhi that is free from agitation and dullness. Therefore,
