As for striving to do it, it is to have a focused intention. As such, in the nine methods of settling the mind, it is said in the context of the first two minds. In the "First Stage of Meditation," it is also said: "Having eliminated sinking, hold that object firmly." In the "Middle Stage of Meditation," it is also said: "Then, having pacified sinking, one should make the mind see that object very clearly, no matter what. One should do it that way." As such, it is said. What is meant by seeing clearly in the mind is not just that the object is clear, but that the way the mind holds it is very clear and firm. This way of relying on mindfulness is very important. If you do not understand this, then as a sign of cultivation, the more you meditate, the more forgetfulness increases, and the wisdom that distinguishes phenomena becomes dull, etc. There are many faults, but it seems that you think you have stable samadhi. As such, as previously stated, when mindfulness binds the mind to the object, one might wonder if it is permissible to generate the thought of observing whether the object is well held or not. This is what must be done, because the "Middle Stage of Meditation" says: "As such, having placed the mind on whatever desired object, one should repeatedly and continuously place the mind on that. Having placed it nearby, one should examine the mind in this way: Does the mind hold the object well, or does it sink, or does it wander because external objects appear? One should examine it in this way." As such, it is said. This is not to look at it after abandoning samadhi, but while remaining in the state of samadhi, one merely observes whether the root object remains as it was previously placed, and if it does not remain, one observes whether it has gone to sinking or excitement. After placing it in samadhi, it is not a very short time, nor a very long time, but one observes intermittently. Doing this before the strength and vigor of the previous mind are exhausted, then the vigor of that mind will arise, and the time spent in the state of vigor will become longer, and it is necessary to quickly realize sinking and excitement. Similarly, intermittently remembering the previous object, just remembering, cultivating through remembering, is also necessary for mindfulness to become strong and to enter continuously. This is the way to cultivate mindfulness, listening.

In this kind of sequence, one should engage for one hour, or half a mel tshe, or one thun, or as long as one is able. It is said that this was spoken in the context of the length of a thun when cultivating vipassanā after śamatha has been accomplished. However, it seems similar even when initially accomplishing śamatha, so one should do it that way. That is to say, as previously explained, if the way of cultivating mindfulness and awareness is to alternate between mindfulness of the object of focus and observation that keeps watch, then even if the thun is a bit long, it will not be a problem. However, for most beginners, if the thun is too long, either forgetfulness will arise and they will become distracted, and at that time, whatever sinking or excitement arises, they will only recognize it after a long time, and will not be able to quickly identify it. Or even if mindfulness is not forgotten, they will easily fall under the influence of sinking and excitement, and it seems that they will not be able to quickly identify those sinking and excitement that have arisen. The former of these two will obstruct the arising of powerful mindfulness, and the latter will obstruct the arising of powerful awareness, so it will become very difficult to cut off sinking and excitement. In particular, forgetting the object of focus and becoming distracted, and not being able to recognize the sinking and excitement that have arisen, is much, very much worse than not being able to quickly recognize sinking and excitement while not forgetting the object of focus. Therefore, the antidote to prevent the loss of mindfulness due to distraction, the way of cultivating mindfulness as previously explained, is very important. If the forgetfulness of distraction is great, and the power of awareness to quickly recognize sinking and excitement is small, then a short thun is necessary. If it seems difficult for forgetfulness to arise, and one is able to quickly realize sinking and excitement, then there is no problem even if the thun is a bit long. Considering this, the duration of one hour, etc., was not specified. In short, because it is necessary to adjust according to one's own mental capacity, it was said to engage for as long as one is able. Furthermore, if there is no sudden harm to body and mind, one should remain in equanimity. If it occurs, one should not cultivate with insistence, but stop immediately, remove the obstacles to the elements, and then cultivate. This is the view of the wise. Therefore, doing so should also be understood as a component of how long to cultivate a thun. Third, how to act after focusing on the object of focus, divided into two parts. How to act when sinking and excitement arise.
